A fantastic rare opportunity to own this One Of A Kind Limited Edition MX5 MK1 Dakar.
Limited to 400 uk units, the MX5 Dakar was a special edition for the UK market released in 1997.
What makes this particular Dakar that much more special was the vision of it's owner to create an optimised and focused MX5 without the compromises normally associated with modifying these cars.
For this bespoke commission, extreme care was taken to pick the right mix of components for Interior, Engine and chassis to help enhance what is already good about this aging classic.
Below is a brief breakdown of the work undertaken:
Engine and Electronics.....
Its turbo, but unlike any seen before:
A fully rebuilt turbocharged 1. 8BP engine lies at the heart of this conversion. Unlike the typical off the shelf turbo kits, the owner wanted the engine to look virtually as if it had been turbocharged from factory akin to the Mazdaspeed Miata. As such, a hybrid K04 turbocharger with integral exhaust housing has been fitted to the engine. This is supported by a fully rebuilt engine including H-Beam conrods with ARP fasteners, new bearings, rings pumps and gaskets.
To control this, the original factory ecu has been replaced with a fully mapable Megasquirt plug and Play. This package retains fantastic mx5 drivability while providing a significant power increase. The turbocharger design with integral exhaust housing is found on modern engines and as such has minimal lag. The power level has been set to well within the capabilities of the turbocharger and engine hardware to ensure longevity.
Interior
Featuring Porsche 964 RS parts........
As this is where most of your time is spent, the owner wanted to enhance the 70's feel to the roadster's interior. The vehicle was fitted with a bespoke combination of parts to help achieve this. This includes, removal of all original grey Dakar trim and wood. Cobra classic RS bucket seats were the starting point then door cards were re-trimmed to match. These include Porsche 964 RS door pulls and surrounds. The centre tunnel has been covered in a genuine Nakame cover, diamond pattern with red stitching. Even though driving pleasure and comfort was the main focus, an audio system comprising of an Alpine bluetooth head unit and Focal components were also fitted.
Exterior and Chassis
She wears her patina with pride.......
Finished in Twilight light blue, recent extensive restoration work completed to both sills using fresh metal. The car has received paint in these areas along with corrosion prevention measures to help preserve this rust prone area. The owner was keen to keep the bodywork and paint as original as possible. While rust free, the few marks typical of 25 year old paint are a source of pride and a reminder of the many adventures she has had over the years.
Gaz gold Pro fully adjustable suspension fitted which have been set to provide good fast road characteristics.
