It is with a deep sadness that I am forced to be listing my 1990 Mazda MX5 MK1 BBR Turbo for sale.
I bought the car with plans to keep it, I came from a 1. 6 MK1 and wanted something a bit bigger so this seemed perfect for me, when I bought the car my insurance company said it was listed as a standard MK1 but since have told me that they recognise it as a BBR Turbo and therefore the costs of insurance are simply unaffordable.
The car currently sits at 130, 000 miles (will rise slightly as still in daily use) and has over 8 months of MOT remaining.
I’m not entirely sure where to start, for those that know MX5’s you will understand how rare and special this car truly is. This car came as a standard MK1 MX5 from Mazda in 1990 and at the time Mazda teamed up with BBR to offer an in-house conversion to turbocharge the MK1 MX5, adding 68 total extra and upgraded parts. When being built they offered a 3 year or 60, 000 mile warranty and in that time not one car had been called back for any sort of fault. Approx 850 units were built between 1990 and 1991. This is about the most reliable and well built type of MX5 MK1 Turbo you can find on the market.

I’m sure I’ve missed some bits, but this is what comes to mind right away.
Mechanically the car is absolutely bulletproof, I use the car every single day and it has never given me a single issue. Coming from a standard MX5, it feels like an absolute rocket. It runs 9 PSI of boost and builds very well in every gear, it is only ever run on 99 Octane Premium Fuel. Every time I have driven it, I have let it warm up and never taken it above 3000RPM before I know it’s truly up to temp. It has been serviced regularly with all receipts and paperwork present in a huge folder dating back to the day it was bought.
In the last 40, 000 miles it has had a complete turbo rebuild by BBR as well as all expected things recently such as diff oils, gearbox oils, spark plugs, various other fluids etc.
It has had professional mapping and Dyno print outs (included in paperwork) which state it is running just shy of 160HP which is a little more than stated by BBR. Other turbo’d MK1’s often make more but they end up giving up the reliability. The power it is running is very fun, dailyable, reliable and safe. I have never once thought to myself that this car needs more power. It has a 0-60 time of 5. 8 seconds recorded.
Every single receipt for the car has been kept, the history in the folder Is pretty outstanding. It has proof of everything from small rubber seals bought for the gearbox rebuild to all the bigger things such as Coilovers and LSD from Suffolk Mazda. Everything from the original service books and BBR customer pamphlet have been kept with the car.
The colour of the car is Chaste White, the bodywork of the car is in decent condition for 32 years old. It does have small blemishes, some paint chips and very small bits of lacquer peel around the edge of the hard top and some silicone marks from where it previously had a bodykit fitted but other than this it is very tidy. It has previously had sill work done so that is no worry at all, all arches are very clean although there is a tiny bit of rust on one arch that could do with being sorted (everything included in pics.) Everything else is in brilliant condition, the interior is immaculate, seats are well kept and cleaned regularly, it has various small quirks such as cup holders, aftermarket Kenwood Radio with USB, Aux, Bluetooth etc. The roof latches work great and hardtop does not leak whatsoever.
The car will come with a bunch of spare parts that were thrown in when I bought it, I haven’t had time or need to look through any of them but they include things such as throttle body, wheel bearings, spacers, sun visors etc..
Please note that some of the pictures I have included are when the car had the bodykit, the car will come without the body kit but will still have the GV front lip, black rear spoiler, TSI’s and headlight intake.
Overall, the car is just a gem, its been my daily and I can’t give it enough praise. It gets comments and looks everywhere you go, it sounds amazing and the turbo whistle is heavenly. It handles incredibly well and in my opinion this is the amount of power all MX5’s should come with from factory, it’s a real experience. It has been hands down the best and most fun car I have ever owned and it hurts to have to be saying goodbye.
I’d like the car to go to an owner that can take car of it, it isn’t for the inexperienced.
