This Scott 500cc Three Speed Super Squirrel left the factory in December 1924, as shown on the original invoice. Until June 2021 XX3453 had two owners, the last was President of the Scott Owners Club. When he offered it to me it was not running and had not, apparently, been fully restored at any time in its life, only repaired as necessary. XX was and is road registered, with its original number, and current V5C now in my name. The previous two owners, who each had the bike for around 50 years, kept a record of its career, including magazine articles, old tax discs, work done, etc.
After taking stock of the bike for a couple of weeks I stripped it for inspection, measurement and replacement of worn parts.
The last owner had overhauled the engine, but it was not running due to a broken ring. I dismantled it and took it for measurement and inspection to Roger Moss (current president of SOC), who approved it for final assembly, with new rings. The hand-operated gear box has been dismantled, measured up and found to be in good condition. The Amac carburettor appears, from its serial number, to be original and is little worn, providing good idling and clean pick-up. The BTH magneto is also contemporary and could be original to the bike. It has been fully overhauled and guaranteed by specialists.
The frame and forks were blasted clean, inspected and powder-coated. There were no cracks, mechanical damage or distortion, and the fork legs and bushes were hardly worn. XX was originally fitted with beaded edge tyres. One of these came off in the late-twenties, causing an accident, and the owner replaced them with the newly available wired-on wheels and tyres. I have fitted new tyres.
XX has been road tested by a fellow Scott Owners Club member, who has written an impartial report.
The bike is offered with various spares, including a full acetylene lighting set, gearbox parts, a spare 600cc block and pistons (one damaged), a rear carrier, and other items.
As the work on XX proceeded I have kept a fairly detailed ‘Build Record’, primarily for my own use but also to inform a new owner of what has been done. This is available, as is the road test, by email on request.
