In 1953, Lancia introduced the Appia to the world at the Turin Motor Show. The Appia was to be seen as the smaller brother of the already renowned Lancia Aurelia and as a successor to the Lancia Ardea, meaning it had big shoes to fill. Over the years, the Appia was built in 3 different series with improvements being made on every new series. The Appia was equipped with a 1. 1l V4 engine with 38hp.
In 1956, the second series of the Appia was introduced, at the Geneva Motor Show. Besides small visual differences on the exterior of the car, a lot more was done under the bonnet. The engine was completely reworked to increase the total power output with 5 horsepower. This was done by altering the compression ratio, developing a new cilinder head, changing the carburettor and altering the camshaft. To increase comfort in the car, the wheelbase on this series was lengthened by 3 centimeters to give the occupants more room and enlarge the storage space in the boot.
Three years later, the third and final series was introduced, again at the Geneva Motor Show. This version also received an increase in engine power, giving the small V4 engine a total power output of 48hp. The front end of the Appia was completely redesigned to be more of a resemblance of the newly released flagship model, the Flaminia.
Over the years, Lancia left the door open for coachbuilders to adapt the Appia. From the second series and onwards, the Appia was destined as a platform chassis for coachbuilt conversions. The first badge of coachbuilders all used a different approach in building their cars. Zagato went for a lightweight and aerodynamic inspired Appia, Vignale created a 2 door luxury example and Pinnin Farina used the Appia to create a 2 door 2+2 coupé.
In 1957, on the Geneva Motor Show, both Vignale and Pinnin Farina were allowed to present their coachbuilt creations to the world. After the show, the cars went into limited production and were distributed by the Lancia dealer network. In the subsequent years, more coachbuilders were added to this list. In total only 5. 161 cars were built as coachbuilt.
“Collection by Vermant” is pleased to be able to offer you this truly exceptional and pristine conditioned Lancia Appia Pinnin Farina Coupé. This specific Lancia Appia was coach built by the famous Italian designhouse Pinnin Farina. The coachbuilt variants of the Appia were treated to a floor mounted shifter. Pinnin Farina styled the Appia to be more similar to the Lancia Flaminia. They did this by incorporating a bonnet scoop, restyling the nose and grille of the car. The nose of the car has been made more dynamic by lowering it and enlarging the grille. When looking at the back of this Appia, we can find some distinctive fins which end in the rear taillights. Another distinctive feature on the Pinnin Farina Coupé is the roof structure. This has been made to resemble a hard top or a closed roof of a spider variant. The roof is constructed in a V-shape with a completely moulded rear window.
This specific Appia Pinnin Farina is finished in a very nice shade of dark blue with a Avorio Chantilly roof. Not only the roof is finished in Avorio Chantilly, but also the wheels. This gives the car a classic, yet subtle additional highlight. The interior of this Pinnin Farina is finished in a very nice beige wool/ cloth with brown accents. This was a more premium finish than the one available on the standard Appia. Currently this car is still finished in its original paint scheme and fitted with its matching engine as indicated by a Lancia Heritage Certificate.
In 2015, the car was bought by a Swiss gentleman and subsequently registered in Switzerland. In recent years, the car was imported into Belgium, were it has resided since. Recently, this very special Appia received a complete overhaul of the brakes to bring it back into top condition and now the car is ready to be enjoyed again by a new owner.
