1960 Wartburg 311 ‘The Man from UNCLE’ Film Stunt Car For Sale

NOW SOLD

Hello everyone, this here is an advert for quite an interesting car, a 1960 Wartburg 311 which was featured as a stunt car in the film ‘The Man from UNCLE’. I have built a strange collection of cars over the last few years including now 7 Wartburgs (this is down from having 11!) and ideally I need to whittle the collection down so I am planning to sell a few of my Wartburgs as well, starting with this one.

Being honest from the get go, this is a modified (for film purpose) car that’s going to need some work, it does run, drive and stop but I’ll run down roughly what has been done and then what needs doing so you have a good idea of what you’re buying.

So this car was bought with another 1958 311 which was modified for the same film. If you haven’t seen the car chase scene between the 311 and Trabant in the film then I definitely recommend finding it on YouTube. In the scenes the 311 rear end can be seen skidding about and this isn’t so easy in a FWD two stroke car so this has been converted to RWD and uses an engine swap to get the power up too. Admittedly I am very much a fan of originality especially on a car like this, but as a film converted stunt car I think this deserves to stay as it is, the car tells a story and served a fun purpose!

So the engine is a Renault 16v and it’s running twin Weber carbs, it sounds glorious and runs well. It has a longitudinal gearbox and prop setup with a rear diff of course for rear wheel drive, I’m unsure of the manufacturer origin of those particular parts but if it’s similar to the 58 I have then that uses classic Volvo drivetrain parts. All gears select well and the car starts and drives and stops as well. I haven’t inspected things closely as I bought the car to do up and I’ve never gotten around to it with all my projects so I’d recommend going right through things anyway.

The interior of the car has also been adapted with a floor mounted pedal box conversion and cover for it, it appears to have a steering upgrade as well, and there is a race seat and steering wheel in it as well. There is a hydraulic handbrake but it is disconnected at present and there is no other handbrake so I recommend some chocks until that’s connected back up! The rest of the interior needs some work and some bits are missing. The passenger front seat is not great. It is a LHD car as well being a mainland import.

The body itself is all original and not in a terrible way as they can be but this isn’t to say it’s perfect - the paint isn’t amazing and has bubbles in places and the white lower part from the film was painted back over in black so that the car could be used as a background car in other films. The driver’s door doesn’t shut properly and catches the wing slightly when opening so this needs attention, the car comes with a bungee cord that holds the door shut from the inside. The passenger front door has a crack in the window and the rear doors don’t appear to open. The chrome is in fairly good condition as pictured. The car was originally a light blue which can be seen in a couple of areas.

The rear floor has been cut and fitted with scaffolding used to mount the cameras in the film, there were a couple of boot shots. There is a racing fuel cell and the battery is relocated to the rear. There are two keys for the ignition that come with the car and there is a kill switch on the dash as well.

I bought the car from a film car company and they bought it from another film car company a while back, the cars were originally modified for ‘The Man from UNCLE’ but were then painted all black to be used as background cars in other films. They have passed hands and have ended up in the UK. They have no UK registration so that would need to be sorted however I will provide a receipt of sale for the new owner and the Wartburg Trabant IFA Club is very helpful should you need them for anything regarding this car. I bought the cars with great intentions like a fair few of my others but time is not on my side and if anyone can make something of what I have then that’s ideal, this car has massive potential and while it certainly has its own problems that need addressing, the base is there, it has a great history, it’s a genuine ex film car, it runs, drives and stops, it has a great drivetrain, engine and carb setup (as long as you don’t mind not being original) and it looks proper classic.

If anyone has any questions then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I am asking £2495 but I am open to offers. To anyone genuinely interested, I am looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

The car can also be seen on our YouTube channel OG Cars, this includes a video of it running and driving! I must also add I’m unsure of the mileage, I would take it with a pinch of salt anyway.

So this car is a bit of an oddball, with an awesome history to it! Remember the film "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."? - This is one of two stunt cars from that film. This one is the actual car you see sliding around door to door with a Trabant in the iconic opening scene. This car has been registered in the UK as a 196
