The Lambretta TV175 Series 1 was launched in September 1957 and was a very different kind of scooter than all that had gone before it. It was the first scooter of the Li range and appeared some 7 months before the Li. The new 4 speed TV machine was able to reach an unprecedented 103 km/ h (64 MPH) which was a significant improvement on the 3 speed LD models which it replaced. However, the new engine was not without its problems and various changes to the design were made during its short production run to improve things. It had a large carburettor with a diaphragm and a complicated kick start arrangement. Early examples had cable adjusters on the handlebar levers and the rear suspension had a combined spring and hydraulic shock absorber which allowed the engine to swivel silent mounts. The new enclosed chain driven engine had increased capacity and the crankshaft, barrel, piston and gearbox ratio were changed. Front forks were fitted with external shock absorbers with the rear plate and fork links redesigned to cope with the extra power. The TV175 models were fitted with a Veglia 120 km/ h speedometer face and a dual seat. The ‘Lambretta’ and ‘TV175’ side panel badges were attached to the panels with small nuts as opposed to the riveted badges on the Series 2 Li panels. Wheel rims had chrome edging and the rear light had a triple bulb arrangement with an orange lens either side of a red centre.
Often referred to as the ‘tourer’ it had a superb performance coupled with beautiful styling and has been hugely sought after for many years by collectors. This stunning example was imported into the UK in 2010 and registered in the UK around that time. She is completely original in every respect in extremely good condition. The original paint colour with the rough sound deadening paint present as correct inside the panels and on the rear mudguard. The Swiss-style pinstripes are all present and original as supplied. The engine and frame numbers are correct for a mid-production TV175 series 1. The original correct carburettor is there. The seat is the original Aquila Continentale with its original cover. The ignition switch is original and still has the elusive half moon cap. The original accessories of Fiamm footboards extensions and Ulma lighting flashes are there as fitted from new on Swiss models. The unique Swiss running in decal is also in good original condition.
This scooter is a time warp example. It would be very hard to find a better original example anywhere. It is very rare to come across this desirable model in such an original state of all over matching patina with the paint in such good condition. She is registered for the UK roads and ready to go. Potentially, a superb investment.
