Rumi was born in Bergamo at the beginning of the twentieth century as a foundry and remained so until the end of the Second World War when the production was converted to the production of marine propellers, periscopes, torpedoes and various armaments, which explains the historical brand of Rumi. : a marine propeller, an anchor and a periscope.
The motorcycle production of the Rumi began in 1949, with the preparation of a prototype of the Turismo model, with a 125 cm³ 6 HP twin-cylinder engine, which was presented at the Milan Trade Fair in 1950, whose production lasted until 1956.
From the following year the production of the Sport model began, with the same displacement, but with sportier characteristics than the previous one and which represented the most successful model of Rumi, until 1958.
The Rumi motorcycles have always stood out for their originality, both for the design and for the construction technique, to the point of being defined "the artist's motorcycles" with reference to the artistic skills of Donnino Rumi, who in addition to founding the Rumi, he was subsequently also a sculptor and painter, dedicating the rest of his life to art, once he retired from industrial activity.
In 1951 Rumi also wanted to try its hand in the scooter sector, at the time dominated by the two giants Vespa and Lambretta, presenting the Scoiattolo to the market, a vehicle of absolute originality, followed in 1954 by Formichino who adopted the same engine as the previous ones.
In a short time, the Rumi also achieved a good reputation in competitions, both on and off-road, and took advantage of the experience accumulated to present to the public models with a distinctly racing nature such as the 1955 Rumi Junior.
The Go-karts made by the company are also well known, since, among other things, it was one of the first producers of Karts in Italy. Mainly powered by the proven 125 engine, they were made with a tubular frame with rather elegant shapes.
The Bergamo-based company, which had also managed to reach 1, 500 employees, in 1960 was involved in a financial crisis from which it could no longer recover and thus ended its production.
Palmares of all respect that of Rumi, who also reported important victories in various speed and endurance championships.
In 1954 the Super Sport Competition “Gobbetto” won the Italian Speed ??Championship.
At the end of the 1950s, in the 125 and 175 cc Scooter class, he triumphed twice in the legendary Bol d'Or, a grueling 24-hour endurance race held in France.
Finally, in 1988 and 1989, Team Corse Rumi, with the Californian rider Fred Merkel, on a Honda RC30 won the Superbike World Championship.
