Description
It might be scruffy in places but its complete except possibly the sun visors and that could save you hundreds of pounds in missing fittings and it runs, drives and stops, how many of the other project 401's on offer at the moment can do that, good basis to restore or use and improve and at this price probably the best project 401 on offer at the moment. Should not take too much work to get it on the road as a lot already done. Was purchased as a partially dismantled long stalled project with an earlier partly dismantled engine, main chassis was in very solid structural condition though could do with a bit of minor work on one or two out riggers, can arrange to have this done if required.
Has a reinforced rear axel case, the first one I have ever come across, also a front anti roll bar as fitted to the 403's, brakes renewed and a servo and remote brake fluid reservoir fitted, a few of the unions need tightening up underneath. Rad had minor repair on header tank and was cleaned , flow and pressure tested by local engineer. I was going to give the cooling system a chemical flush and fit a Davies Craig EWP but although I was hoping to have done all these jobs by now unexpected problems before Christmas and work on one of my other cars since has scuppered those plans so purchaser will probably have to do those outstanding jobs . The car is fitted with a slightly later correct specification 85C engine and gearbox which as you car see from the pictures has excellent oil pressure at idle 50 psi. LED lamps at the back with mods to improve safety and a two speed wiper motor has been fitted for similar reasons. There are a set of hub caps available which are not currently fitted and the car comes with a hand book and Jack.
The car was repainted about 25/ 30 years ago sadly without the use of etch primer so its not as good as it looks in the photographs, a shame as its a lovely colour Rolls Royce Garnet which suits the lines of the car really well, where it was flaking off the aluminium the metal underneath was perfectly sound and clean, ultimately it will need a repaint but I was hoping to get it back on the road last summer and use it as is but another project took longer and cost a lot more than expected so plans had to change. This car was last on the road I believe in 1968 and was purchased from the late Brian May as a restoration project by its previous long term owner.
All keys present and all locks and release cables work properly. New screen and side window seals fitted along with new felts to the door windows.
Photographs were taken from the point of collection and as the work progressed and these are available for inspection when the car is viewed .
