The Heinkel Tourist was launched in 1953 by German aircraft manufacturer Heinkel Flugzeugwerke to appeal to the luxury market of high end scooter riders. It was known in England as the ‘Rolls Royce of scooters’ and in the USA as the ‘Cadillac of scooters’. High praise indeed in the crowded 1950’s scooter market and despite the high price for the machines over 100, 000 were sold up until the end of 1965 when production ceased.

Starting with the 1953 model 101 A0 with a 149cc engine on 8 inch wheels numerous improvements were made through five upgraded versions until the 175cc 103 A2. Under the steel body panels there is a tubular frame onto which the 4 stroke engine is mounted. Electrics are 12volt and it has electric start which was was introduced in 1955. By the time of the 103 A2 it was a very different smooth 60 MPH powerful scooter with 4 speed, 10 inch wheels, indicators and new styling particularly at the rear end. The improvements and innovations combined to ensure healthy sales over a fairly long production period and compared to other ‘luxury’ scooters of the time the Heinkel Tourist was a success.

Royal Seitenwagen was founded in 1924 and built beautiful sidecars for the likes of BMW, Durkopp, Goggo and NSU motorcycles. The scooter version was known as the Modell RSG Royal Roller Seitenwagen and was seen attached to NSU, Durkopp, Lambretta and Heinkel scooters in the day. The company outlived its competitors Steib and Stoye but also eventually folded in 1966. These are very rare sidecars today.

This original 1965 combination was registered new with its sidecar in February 1966 and is one of the last Tourists ever produced. The Royal sidecar being factory fitted is set up perfectly for the model. The owner was a Dutch doctor whose family owned the scooter for 50 years before it went to De Croon Classics of Twello in the Netherlands, who then offered for sale at auction in Essen in 2016 where our vendor acquired it. Since then it has had a complete mechanical recommission by a Heinkel expert in Ireland including new tyres and is ready to use and described as ‘on the button’ by the vendor and riding sweetly through all of the gears. It is adorned with a large number of very rare Heinkel scooter accessories and we note the superb Ideal windscreen, front and rear bumpers, spare wheel holder with luggage rack, rare side panel flashes, and an even rarer exhaust deflector. The scooter seat cover was re-covered correctly by the Heinkel expert at the time of the recommissioning. The sidecar is in excellent condition, set up correctly and the seat is totally original. The paintwork all over is described as very good original paint but with some scratches on the sidecar mudguard. Supplied with 2 period style helmets.

In our opinion this combination represents the pinnacle of Heinkel scooters. It is the last version of arguably the most luxurious scooter ever produced and in original paint. She is ready to ride and with one owner for practically all of its life and only a believed 20, 000 km covered (at time of consignment) this is an exceptional opportunity to purchase a very special machine.
