EXTERIOR
Effortlessly cool the E9 3. 0 CSL is a perfectly proportioned piece of automotive design that remains timeless, with its sweeping lines flowing uninterrupted thanks to its stunning pillarless construction. Having been restored by Munich Legends in 2019 the car wears it’s period correct Golf yellow with pride.
Contrasting the bright yellow finish sits the trademark black CSL stripe, period black number plates, black wheel centres and plenty of chrome work around the body.
Having covered minimal mileage since the restoration work overall condition of the car is excellent – presenting with a deep shine the bodywork appears in wonderful condition with the underside showing no signs of corrosion in the usual areas.
INTERIOR
The interior of the BMW E9 coupe is like none other, beautifully laid out with lashings of wood trim it is a wonderful place to be. Slide into the Scheel seats and it’s obvious this is a special car; the heavily bolstered model specific buckets are in good condition with no tears or creasing. The wood trim retains excellent shape and lacquer with no major marks or wear whilst carpet and mats are as clean throughout.
Looking to the centre tunnel shows how advanced the car was for its time, with electric window controls for front and rear and a Getrag 4-Speed manual gearbox, whilst in the dashboard a simple, period style AM/ FM radio provides a basic level of entertainment.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Fitted with a 3003cc engine and 4-Speed Getrag gearbox the appeal of the 3. 0 CSL becomes apparent the moment the key turns and the straight-6 rumbles into life, settling to a smooth but purposeful idle.
Producing just over 200bhp the 6-cylinder engine is more than powerful enough to make the featherweight CSL feel fast; weighting in at just over 1, 100kg the E9 manages 0-60mph in just 6. 9 seconds and goes onto a top speed of 137mph and transforms the smooth idle note the a glorious straight-6 symphony as the revs build to a 6, 100 rpm crescendo.
Rebuilt during the cars restoration the matching numbers engine and gearbox appear to be in excellent order, having been run in and covered minimal mileage since the work was completed. More recently a new clutch kit was installed in January of 2022 ensuring the drivetrain is tight and assured.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The period 14 inch BMW wheels present well, free from any signs of curbing or fading and are wrapped in period correct Michellin XWX tyres at each corner.
Brakes are both strong and easy to modulate with discs and pads showing plenty of life.
HISTORY FILE
First registered new in the UK in February of 1973, this bold CSL has enjoyed careful use and attention both here and in Ireland. Receipts for work are in chronological order since the mid 90’s and continue up to the present day.
In 2019 this E9 would be subject to a complete cosmetic and mechanical overhaul with Munich Legends. The car was stripped back to bare metal and built from the ground up, including a freshly rebuilt M30 engine, before a fresh coat of 070 Golf yellow was applied alongside carefully restored chrome work.
It’s fortunate that BMW had such a lively colour palette in period – the vivid bodywork suits the classic coupe shape perfectly.
Having covered just over 2k miles since restoration the car still presents in superb condition, ready for it’s next custodian to enjoy.
