Despite fulfilling BMC’s requirements for a small yet roomy city car, the Alec Isigonis designed platform beared a significant potential for rallying. Exploited by F1 builder John Cooper, the transverse mounted engine and corner-placed wheels layout would be powered by consecutive capacity enlargements. In 1961 one thousand units would have their 848cc engines of 34 bhp bored out to 997cc of a 55bhp output to achieve Group 2 homologation. The twin SU carburetted engines would subsequently be further enlarged to 1071 cc and 1275 cc rendering an output of 68 bhp and 75 bhp respectively that secured winning the Monte Carlo and 1000 Lakes Rally Championship titles from 1964 to 1967. These rallying specials would also be equipped with close ratio gears, front disc brakes and twin fuel tanks.
The Mini offered was produced as road legal in 1975 for the European market with an 848cc engine. In 2005 it entered a series of 32 competition events that entailed constant development through numerous period correct upgrades. These included amongst others fully adjustable heavy duty suspension, anti roll bars, roll cage, competition twin circuit brakes, racing bushing and mounts, works-spec driver’s dash box, competition loom and twin fuel tanks with quick refill caps. In 2012, it benefited from a 1295cc big bore crosshatched Stage 4 engine upgrade featuring AE pistons and liners, a competition camshaft that was machined to 256 degrees, twin HS4 SU carburetion of red springs and AAU nozzles, bored out exhaust manifold, an Aldon ignition module and a 3-to-1 performance exhaust. The ported 1275 cylinder head was ported with valve clearance set for both increased torque and bhp output at higher rev range. The over 90 bhp engine propels the 731kg body via a competition quickshift 1st/ 2nd synchro’ed gearbox assembly and a 3. 7:1 LSD to raise the overall standing by 40% to 16 Class wins and 11 Class Podium finishes.
