This is the first time that this car has been on the open market.
A three owner car, this lovely original P5b Coupe was supplied to a Mr. Bates in Dunstable who kept the car until 1992 when it passed to his son at the same address. The Rover stayed with him until 2018 when it was purchased by a family friend and who remembers going on holiday to the South of France with Mr. Bates Senior driving his Rover. He had one of his company mechanics follow him all the way so as to be on hand in case of mechanical maladies!
The Bates owned a large Lime company and had a fleet of twenty five lorries, so the Coupe was maintained in-house to meticulous standards.
It has covered 92, 000 miles and it drives very nicely. It appears never to have been restored with an original interior, beautifully straight bodywork and no repairs to the underside. There are a few blemishes after fifty one years, but the original pin stripes remain in place and the paintwork seems to be original. The places where P5s normally suffer with corrosion are superb.
Barring some minor surface bubbling on one wing, the Rover appears completely rust free.
Inside the seats could do with some light re-colouring in places if you want it just-so, but leather is unworn the stitching is excellent. The original tool kit is in place as is the original radio, which we assume will need a bit of a fettle.
The history file includes here is correspondence with Henlys giving instructions including Mr. Bates insisting that he has a single digit number plate, an original brochure and colour swatch, maintenance bills and the original Dealer Pack with all the books.
This lovely 3. 5 Litre Coupe has mellowed nicely. You could carry out some cosmetic work but it might be nice to leave the old girl and enjoy her as she is.
