We are delighted to present for sale this 1994 ex-military Land Rover® 90, which has an incredible ex-military history, and was purchased by a local (ex-REME soldier) enthusiast from the British Army. It is incredibly rare to see a Land Rover® 90 with such a history and a specification. Read on below!
L759 RKU was sold to the British Army in 1994, with the military registration 36 KL 11 (entering service on 4th January that year). The military service records are still with the vehicle, along with the military specification sheet. CAST off in July 2011 to Witham's Specialist Vehicles of Grantham, an MOD purchaser, with 101, 949KM's on the clock (63, 348 miles). It was then purchased by a gentleman local to us in Filey, North Yorkshire, who has owned it until our purchase. This gent served in the British Army during the same period as this vehicle, as metal fabricator in the British Army. He used it sparingly, covering just 10, 000 miles during the 10 year period of ownership, wanting a vehicle he could enjoy to remind him of his time in the forces. He also paid for an engine rebuild with Park Engineering in Malton, with a significant bill for this, not because the engine required it, but for peace of mind during use (and in his words - a bit of fun!). This included reboring blocks, new pistons, new crank shaft, refacing the head of the engine, including valves and seats.
Externally, this vehicle has all the hallmarks of a good ex-military 90 - the military screw lenses, bonnet mounted spare, front rope, front tow hitch, NATO rear hitch, rear bumperettes, military stickers and mounting points for pioneer tools on the rear. A full set of Michelin 750 x R16s are fitted, with a matching bonnet mounted spare too. In light of the fantastic history on this 90, we have elected to present it exactly how it was sold to us, with the bodywork having the imperfections one expects as the photos show, and the paintwork being the original military Matte finish, rather than re-painting in a high-gloss one. We think this is more in keeping with how it should be, and means it can be used without worrying about scratching a lovely high-gloss finished paint work.
On the inside, it is very much as one would expect with two front deluxe seats, gun clips, fire extinguisher, original central convoy light switch, with headlights and side lights and map light for the passenger. There is an interior light fitted, along with sun visors, which is a nice touch and both front passengers have 3 point inertia belts too. The rear is fitted with a pair of twin benches to give seating for six people including the driver, and a load mat is fitted to the floor, as the photos show. It is exactly as it would've been during service. Aluminium Door Tops mean that they won?t rot away like mild steel ones on later 90s, either.
Where this 90 really shines though, is out on the road - the diesel engine rebuild means no dramas when starting and driving, with minimal glow needed to start, and minimal smoke... running clear when driving. Power Steering means that low-speed driving and parking are a dream and not a chore! Coil springs mean a supple ride, too, far superior to the earlier leaf springs and the five speed gearbox means a relaxed cruise and better fuel economy, too. We collected this vehicle from Filey, which is 55 miles from our premises & drove it back ? it performed without fault, everything works (even all the gauges and lights!) and it was great fun, too. Although these engines are not as quick as their later TDI counterparts, they make up for this through simple, mechanical engineering and bulletproof long-term reliability there is nothing electrical to fix, just some simple fuses and everything else can be done with a spanner, a hammer and a youtube guide/ workshop manual. This would be an ideal vehicle for someone wanting to benefit from Classic Insurance, and that Classic Land Rover® look, but without the drawbacks ? light steering, a far better ride, five speed gearbox, disc brakes, etc etc? whilst also steering clear of more modern foibles ? ECU issues, misfires, sensor failures, injector faults. It means that you get the vast majority of the creature comforts you expect, without the annoying more modern type failures that later 90s can afford. Low mileage means a nice well-sorted feel when out on the road and a completely un-welded original chassis too... something no civilian 90 of this age has unless it has been replaced.
In summary, if you are looking for a Land Rover® which you can use more frequently than a Series, with modern comforts which can be easily fixed it they do go wrong, whilst benefitting from Classic Insurance, low running costs and servicing costs, then this could be for you. With a great history going back to new, low mileage and a completely un-welded chassis this is just about all things to all men.... something which very few Land Rover® 90s can boast!
