Description
This rare and desirable Australian delivered 220SE coupe was one of only 5 delivered new to Australia. There were fewer than 50 220SE coupes manufactured in RHD configuration, and this car being Body number 0001 indicates it was the first coupe made in 1959.
Complete with the original handbooks, brochures and service book which shows that the car was delivered new by Merna Motors in Sydney, NSW who were then the distributors for Mercedes Benz cars to a Mr G. A. Lloyd Jnr, and an ownership trace is also supplied.
This car has a lovely and original body, however the car was repainted some years ago in the elegant blue you see today rather than the lighter original shade.
The interior has recently been completely retrimmed in the original shade and this together with the refurbishment of the timberwork shows receipts for over 80, 000 for this work.
As is usual for these coupe models , the interior is the most expensive area of the car to refurbish , such is the detail in the interiors of these models, included within the invoicing is a considerable account for the supply of genuine parts sourced from Germany.
The engine bay and boot area are original, and the car has only covered a little over 84, 000 miles in its 64 year life.
A further invoice file reveals an additional $90, 000 of maintenance and expenditure, and this includes , overhaul of the transmission, front end, shock absorbers, new fuel tank and pump, brake overhaul plus many other items as required.
Much evidence is included in establishing the history , provenance and credentials of this fine car, including a colour article in the April/ May 1986 edition of Sports and Classic Cars Australia
Being the more desirable and powerful fuel injected later series SE , and with the advantage of the smooth manual gearbox over the semi-automatic version completes the picture.
This really is a very rare and desirable RHD manufactured coach built Mercedes Benz of the Golden Era.
