Midget Mk IV: Chrome Bumper Conversion/ Recent Engine
The MG Midget is a lightweight sports car produced by MG from 1961 to 1979.
The car lent heavily on the reputation of the earlier J, D, M & T Types produced by Abingdon around WW2 and was the perfect entry level sports car for a new generation of appreciative young drivers who wanted affordable performance.
By the mid-1970’s British Leyland had to meet US federal regulations and the new Mk IV Midget was given large black plastic-covered bumpers, an anti-roll bar, 1500cc engine from the Spitfire and an upgraded gearbox. The cocktail of more engine torque and taller gear ratios resulted in faster acceleration (0 to 60 in 12 seconds) and a top speed of over 100mph. The best of all the Midgets.
In March 1980 Ian Whitfield went to Wheatley’s (Darlington) and traded his existing Midget for a 1980 Pageant Blue example for the princely sum of £3, 134. Production ceased on 7th December 1979 so this would have been one of the last Midgets registered by Wheatley’s.
Fast forward to August 2018 and Peter Stovell, a resident of West Sussex, was looking for a Midget as a retirement toy for him and his wife to enjoy and found “Madge” in the local classifieds - it was love at first sight.
Over the next five years Peter lavished care and cash on Madge including:
· Ivor Searle Replacement (Balanced) Engine
· Clutch Kit
· Ignition Kit (Ballast Coil/ Condenser/ Plugs/ Leads/ Points/ Rotor Arm/ Cap)
· Carburettors Serviced (Jets/ Seals/ Floats etc) & Fuel Pump
· Fuel Tank
· Brake Overhaul – Front Discs & Green Stuff Pads
· Replacement Front Seats, Trim Panels, Door Capping’s & Carpet Set
· Replacement Hood, Tonneau & Wind Stop
· Replacement Wheels & Tyres
Today the car drives as good as she looks thanks to Peter's dedication. She has been used extensively for local MG Owners Club events, various road trips and has provided huge enjoyment & many happy memories.
There is a nice history file going back to 2010 containing invoices, MOT’s, old V5’s, a copy of the original Bill of Sale and a message from the first owner.
Ready for buzzing down country lanes, weekends aways, classic car shows or simply a run out to the pub on a sunny evening Madge is a classic to polish, use and, most of all, enjoy.
