BackgroundThe Mercedes-Benz W124 is a range of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1984 to 1997. The E220 A124 refers to a specific model of the Mercedes-Benz W124 E-Class — specifically the convertible (A124) variant equipped with the 2. 2-litre four-cylinder engine. The E220 was a popular choice for the W124, and is well known for its legendary German reliability and boxy styling. From 1993, the 124 series was officially marketed as the E-Class. The W124 succeeded the 123 series in 1984 and was itself succeeded by the W210 E-Class (saloons, estates, rolling chassis) after 1995, and the C208 CLK-Class (coupés and cabriolets) in 1997.
The CarThis Mercedes rolled out of the factory in 1997, right at the very end of the W124 production run. It is finished in dark green over a tan interior — the perfect combination for any car, let alone a convertible Mercedes. It has just ticked over 100, 000 miles, which is nothing for these 2. 2-litre inline-four petrol engines. They came with either an extremely rare 5-speed manual or the much more popular 4-speed automatic gearbox; this car, like many, is fitted with the automatic. The car has just been fitted with a new hood, although the vendor notes it currently only works manually, so it will need a little fettling to get it back to its best. It will, however, come with 12 months’ MOT. Overall, this is a great opportunity to own an appreciating classic. It could entice someone into the desirable world of classic Mercs, or make a perfect summer daily driver.
