Description
BMW E21 BVM5 90CV MY 1981, presented at the Paris Motor Show on 02/ 10/ 1980. The BMW 3 Series E21 was the first generation of a model that would become the central pillar of the Bavarian marque. The aim was to offer a compact, sporty and affordable saloon. It successfully replaced the 02 Series. After the second oil crisis in 1979, carmakers - even the most prestigious like BMW - had to adapt their range. Before 1980, the 316 was equipped with a 1. 6L (M10B16) with 90 bhp, which was already decent. But in 1980, BMW replaced this engine with the 1. 8L (M10B18), still rated at 90 bhp, but with more torque (140 Nm compared with around 115 previously).
The post-1979 economic and energy context prompted BMW to make this technical choice: a slightly larger engine, but better suited to the new fuel consumption constraints, while retaining the reliability of the M10. In August 1980, BMW replaced the 1. 6L engine in all 316s with a 1. 8L M10B18, while retaining the "316" name. A modern design by Paul Bracq, with a single round headlamp on each side. Inside, the E21 was the first model to feature a driver-facing centre console.
