HISTORY.
On sale is a beautifully presented R107 500 SL, which not only reached the forty-year-old milestone but also complies with ULEZ, No Tax, and MOT. This makes this 500SL a very serious contender if you are looking for this vintage Period SL. The current owner has invested over £22'000 in parts and labour perfecting it to this standard. A full bare metal repaint, which is blemish-free and scratch-free. Mechanically, this SL is as good as you will find with a new timing chain, bushes, fluids, brakes, and nothing not gone untouched. The wheels were changed to the steel type with chrome Hub caps to give it a more period look, combined with white wall tyres.
A flick of the key brings this M117 V8 to life without any hesitation, with a smooth idle and linear revving engine. A glorious V8 tone with these earlier models. The interior is factory original with no over-restored seats, a nice patina and the smell of a 107 period charm. The Carpets are all fresh, and a wood pack showing a deep gloss finish. The soft top presents very well and was fitted only a few years ago, with ease of putting up and taking down. Everything is working in the cabin with cruise control at the touch of the lever and the joy of the heated seats. This is such a well-sorted SL with a mileage that could be half of what is showing.
WHY BUY.
Sometimes, when you come across these pre-facelift R107 500SL, they have a sort of respect for the people who know. They command road presence and feel like a more vintage SL. The Hub caps show off the chrome and give it that more pagoda look. During my inspection, I could witness so many new parts; it was like a restoration project. The bulkhead has been addressed with new metal and is as good as it gets. During the test drive, it performed effortlessly as the V8S do, but this one was so smooth and direct you could take it to Italy tomorrow, with Confidence. The History folder is over three inches thick, covering all the work taken out over the ownership. Books, spare keys, and wallet all present and correct.
