The Mercedes W111 Coupe was unveiled as the successor to the Ponton Coupe range in February 1961 and debuted as the 220 SE Coupe, built on the W111 platform, the so‑called tailfin. The coupes were technically equivalent to the saloons and remained in production until May 1971, six years longer than their four‑door sister models. Unlike the saloons, they lack the fashionable tail fins, have a lower roofline, and therefore come across as more elegant and timeless, which earned them classic status much earlier. This timelessness also allowed them to be built largely unchanged in parallel with the successors to the 111‑series saloons, the S‑Classes of the W108/ W109 range. The W111 Coupe was offered with a range of engines. Six‑cylinder options included the 220 SE, 250 SE and 280 SE, as well as eight‑cylinder 280 SE 3. 5, with the 3. 5‑litre V8 delivering 200 PS as the pinnacle. As part of the last major model facelift in 1969, the front end was redesigned. The grille became wider and flatter, and the bonnet dropped more steeply. These models are known among collectors as “flat‑radiator” cars and were produced in small numbers. This is one such vehicle.
The vehicle we are offering was first delivered in May 1970 in Switzerland. It comes with a stamped service book, from which the mileage of 156, 400 km can be traced. The car has undergone partial restoration, the paint has been renewed and the entire mechanical, as well as systems, have been overhauled or comprehensively serviced. The interior is completely original, the leather shows no damage and a remarkably beautiful patina; the carpeting and chrome are also original. The colour combination in Dark Green (solid) and Bamboo leather is very elegant and suits the car superbly. Since the car was delivered in Switzerland, it was ordered in the France specification, so it still has the yellow halogen headlamps, which suits the car immensely. The wood and the paint finish were professionally restored some time ago to the highest standard. The owner’s manuals and the tool kit are complete. In recent years the car has spent time in prestigious collections and has been cared for by top craftsmen, and the car shows and drives accordingly. The Mercedes 280 SE 3. 5 offered here is a very honest, rust‑free and accident‑free example, which is enjoyed for its beautiful patina.
