Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 13th November on Thursday the 13th of November. Background:Originally conceived by the French manufacturer Martin-Moulet, the Valmobile was reimagined in Japan by the Hirano Motorcycle Company from 1956 onward. Marketed as the 'suitcase scooter', it was designed for compact urban mobility and easy transport. Its folding mechanism allowed it to collapse into a compact form, small enough to carry or stow in a car boot. Powered by a 50cc two-stroke engine with a single-speed centrifugal clutch transmission, the Valmobile was promoted as ideal for novice riders.
Thanks to strategic marketing and strong dealer networks, Hirano succeeded where Martin-Moulet had not, producing nearly 100, 000 units before production ceased in 1961. Folding or unfolding the Valmobile required no tools and was claimed to take only 30 seconds. A range of accessories was available, including twin seats, saddle bags and even a sidecar attachment. With a top speed of 35mph and weighing just 75lbs, the Valmobile captured the imagination during a peak era of scooter enthusiasm in both Japan and the United States.
The Vehicle:This particular 1956 Hirano Valmobile was purchased directly from a museum in Japan and is believed to be among the most original surviving examples of its kind. It has not been restored or modified, and retains all of its factory components, including the original driving belt, which would need to be replaced were the new owner to recommission it for road use. However, the decision was made to preserve the scooter exactly as it would have appeared nearly 70 years ago, making it an exceptional reference piece for collectors or museums.
The scooter is accompanied by Japanese export documentation and confirmation that all import taxes and duties have been paid. With its patina and originality intact, this is a rare opportunity to acquire what may well be one of the best-preserved Hirano Valmobiles in existence.
