History
Jaguar introduced the XK8 in 1996 at the Geneva Motor Show, and the magnificent British sports coupé stole the show thanks to its elegant lines and, above all, what lay under the bonnet.
Jaguar had envisaged replacing the aging XJS, launched by the British manufacturer in 1975, more than two decades earlier. The marque had even developed a platform and an engine for this new model in the 1980s. But in November 1989, Ford bought Aston Martin and Jaguar and delayed the car’s launch. The new owner felt the already-developed model should be offered on Aston Martin’s higher-end range, and only after that was Jaguar authorised to market its grand GT coupé. Consequently, Aston Martin, its sporty sister company, launched the DB7 in September 1994. A year and a half later, in March 1996, Jaguar finally unveiled the XK8.
The new model appeared during the bio-design era, and the XK8’s front end followed that trend. It wore an oval grille traversed by a chrome horizontal bar. The logo sat above, while a discreet lip spoiler had been added to the bottom of the bumper. Jaguar installed new sleek headlights and placed the fog lamps below. The longitudinal bulge of the bonnet misled customers into thinking the car had a straight‑six engine, when in fact it was a V8.
From the side, the elegant lines designed by Ian Callum gave the car a timeless look. Thanks to its long bonnet and short boot, the XK8 evoked the legendary Jaguar E-Type of the 1960s. The raked windscreen offered a view of a low, sculpted cabin. At the rear, the manufacturer fitted a slanted rear window followed by the tailgate. On the rear bumper, round tail lights framed the boot opening, while underneath the bumper there were two chromed exhaust outlets.
The interior, fully lined in leather, offered exceptional elegance and luxury. Jaguar had adorned the dashboard, centre console and door caps with walnut inserts. In front of the driver, embedded dials gathered the climate controls and the audio system. The XK8 was offered with a cassette player and, as an option, a nine‑speaker audio system with a CD changer in the boot. At the front, two comfortable bucket seats, with lumbar support available for the driver, occupied the space, while at the rear two passengers could hardly get in.
The XK8 was equipped with a 4. 0‑litre all‑aluminium V8 with dual overhead camshafts. A first for Jaguar, which had previously offered only a five‑speed automatic transmission. Power was sent to the rear wheels, and the independent suspension on all four corners provided excellent handling while delivering optimum ride comfort.
