Description

The 2004 Audi RS6 C5 Cosworth V8, launched in 2002, marked a historic turning point for the German brand by becoming the first RS6 in history and one of the most impressive super estate cars (and saloons) ever produced. Based on the C5 generation Audi A6, this model was developed by the quattro GmbH division (now Audi Sport) and positioned itself as the pinnacle of the brand's family performance, capable of rivalling the best sports cars of the time. It combined luxury, all-wheel drive and brutal performance — something few competitors could offer in the early 2000s. At its heart was an extraordinary 4. 2-litre twin-turbo V8, developed in collaboration with Cosworth, which took the RS6 to another level within Audi. This engine delivered 450 bhp and 560 Nm, impressive figures for the beginning of the millennium, and was coupled with a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox reinforced to handle the enormous torque. Quattro all-wheel drive with asymmetric distribution ensured exemplary grip, while the DRC (Dynamic Ride Control) system — an innovative technology at the time — reduced body roll when cornering without resorting to electronics, thanks to a hydraulic circuit interconnected between the shock absorbers. The performance was impressive: around 4. 7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/ h, making it faster than many sports coupés of its time, despite being a family estate car weighing almost 2 tonnes. The maximum speed was electronically limited to 250 km/ h, although many models were capable of exceeding 280 km/ h. Among the curiosities, it is worth noting that the RS6 C5 was the last RS with an engine developed in partnership with Cosworth, making it especially desirable among enthusiasts. Another interesting note is that the model was partially assembled in Neckarsulm and partially in Gyor, Hungary, due to the complexity of the engine. Aesthetically, the RS6 C5 stood out for its widened wheel arches, specific bumpers, more aggressive air intakes and exclusive rims. The interior followed Audi's discreet but sporty philosophy: Recaro seats, carbon trim and model-specific instrumentation. This aesthetic subtlety contributed to its status as a ‘camouflaged supercar’. The legacy of the RS6 C5 is enormous. It established the formula that still defines the RS6 today: a large engine, quattro traction, everyday usability and supercar-worthy performance. In many circles, it is considered one of the most charismatic RS models and one of the last to combine pure mechanics, brute force and a relative absence of electronics — qualities that give it a very special character within the Audi Sport universe.
