Introduced in 1998, the Yamaha YZF-R1 redefined the superbike class (much as those other 1990s titans, the Ducati 916 and Honda CBR900RR Fireblade, had done before it). Brainchild of Kunihiko Miwa, the newcomer’s ‘vertically stacked gearbox’ whereby the mainshaft sat above (rather than in line with) the crankshaft made for a lighter, more compact drivetrain which in turn allowed the frame to utilise a longer rear swing-arm within the same compact wheelbase. Better able to put its substantial power down as a result and wieldier because of its lower mass, the Yamaha earned rave reviews from the contemporary motoring press. With some 150bhp and 79lbft on tap, the YZF-R1 was found capable of 0-60mph in 2. 96 seconds and 168mph. Finished in a bold red and white (or subtler blue and white) colour scheme, the earliest ‘RN01’ versions were rawer and less forgiving than their successors.
A desirable, first ‘RN01’ series machine, ‘S189 AAV’ is said to be in ‘very good condition for its age’. Part of a Japanese motorcycle collection which is only being dispersed due to an imminent house move, the Yamaha has been fired-up recently but would doubtless benefit from a thorough check over prior to proper usage. Finished in the preferred red and white livery, it is offered for sale with current V5C, handbooks and the second owner’s 1999 purchase receipt for £7, 096.
