This Elan Sprint was ordered new and supplied by Bell & Colvill to well known Le Mans Winner and Formula 1 driver/ sports car racing driver and historic garage owner, Duncan Hamilton. It is believed that Duncan Hamilton ordered the car from new with a Lotus factory 5-speed gearbox (the 5-speed gearbox was not homologated by the factory and consequently was fitted after the car was produced by the service department as an option. Some cars were also fitted by the suppling dealer with kits supplied by the factory). There is correspondence with the car that says the Elan Sprint has always had a 5-speed gearbox. The recent owner of this car had owned the car for 13 odd years and he has confirmed that after owning several Elan Sprint's before this was his best and favourite Elan.
We have recently carried out a comprehensive service which included engine bay and dashboard wiring loom, removal of alloy wheels and refit with original steel wheels, new set of tyres, fit reconditioned 3-core radiator, fit new battery, top and bottom hoses, repair of battery box section, fit UJ's to prop shaft, removal of rear diff and overhaul with bearings etc, fit all new rear wishbone bushes and diff mounts, fit bumper bolts, removal of 5-speed gearbox, fully overhaul 5-speed gearbox and refit, fit new O/ S CV joint, make necessary repairs to CV joints, repair servo. Engine, gearbox and diff fully serviced and fit all new bushes wherever necessary, refurbish original Colin Chapman steering wheel.
A considerable amount of money has been spent to get this car in this condition. The previous owner had made sensible upgrades and rebuilds including fitting a Lotus galvanised chassis, full engine rebuild to QED 420 spec, Susan Miller CV drive shafts, aluminium fuel tank, WOSP pre engaged starter and alternator. After the recent work this has made this Lotus Elan Sprint a superb driving and reliable car that has the benefit of a super history file, low, miles, low ownership and has the original service book and handbook from new with green log book showing Duncan Hamiliton as the first owner.
