As the Rover Group prepared for the cessation of Mini production at Longbridge, many knew it would be the end of an era. The company had been delivering limited editions since the 1980s, and the high-profile Cooper model since 1990, yet the real rarity from the final year of production would be the regular Mini Seven. Re-badged with a retro name that harked back to the 1959 launch of the Austin Se7en, it featured much the same performance and equipment as the upmarket model, but without the cartoon-like wheels and fussier trim. The engine was the trusty A-series 1275cc inline four in A+ specificttion with fuel injection, front mounted radiator and electric ***. Inside, leather-and-cloth trim added period ambience, yet modern conveniences such as a driver’s airbag, side impact bars in the doors and an alarm-immobiliser satisfied modern expectations. Discerning buyers could enjoy the added cache of owning a truly rare variant, sold without the hype of the Cooper. Just 374 examples of the Rover Mini Seven were produced for the home market, across three colours: Solar Red, Black, and Old English White.
This endearing limited-edition Mini was supplied new by Evans Halshaw Rover of Aston, Birmingham, and of the 374 home-market Sevens, it is one of 233 finished in Solar Red. Its first owner enjoyed it until 2008, and, even more enamoured, the second cared for it until 2025, when it was bought by another ardent Mini enthusiast. MOT history back to 2005 confirms that the present mileage of just over 26, 300 is genuine, and testifies to the Mini having lived a life of sympathetic and sparing use. Its present certificate, showing no advisories, is valid until July, 2027.
Altogether, this is very well-preserved car. As per its original specification, it still has the alarm and immobiliser, cream and red seats in the style of the original Austin Mini Seven, a red dash and matching one-piece carpet, plus two sets of keys and the original jack. It has had a new exhaust and catalytic converter fitted, and has been personalised slightly with body-coloured wheel arches and 12in. Minilite-style wheels. In addition to the MOTs, paperwork includes service records, sales literature, the current V5C, and the original book pack with wallet. The Mini started readily and ran well for our photoshoot.
