The closest thing to a production homologated Group A BMW 635 Touring Car?
If you want the track-honed road-going version of the championship-winning 635 Touring Car – winner of the ETCC in 1983 at the hands of Dieter Quester – and spiritual successor to the iconic CSL, then it has to be the Alpina B9. The M635 did not race in period (along came the M3). Alpina-prepared 635s did!
This car is one of 89 B9 Coupes built worldwide (many more E28 saloons were built). Of those 89, 14 were right hand drive, built by Sytner UK in a factory-sanctioned facility. Of the 14, this is the only car fitted with a manual gearbox known to the register. Sytner records are not definitive, but it may be the only manual RHD B9 Coupe built!
Alpina B9 specification:
• Cylinder head modifications including bigger valves, hemispherical combustion chambers
• Uprated camshaft
• Lightened, balanced, blue-printed engine; Mahle pistons (this car dyno’d at 280bhp)
• Lowered, uprated Bilstein suspension
• Alpina spoilers front and rear
• Alpina B9 badges, decals, steering wheel, gear knob and instruments
Upgrades to this car (all are reversible):
• ‘Alpina’ engraved BMW M635 4 piston front brake calipers and discs
• Goodridge braided brake hoses front and rear
• Fritz’s Bits stainless steel exhaust system and manifold
• Sparco alloy strut brace
• Steering box ‘long bolt’ modification
• Wired battery charge point
A comprehensive folder of bills and records demonstrates this car has been in continuous enthusiast ownership and has been previously prepared and sold by BMW themselves (1997), Romans International, Munich Legends (2006) and Martin Chisholm (2010). Preparation by Munich Legends included replacement of hoses, fuel lines and suspension rubbers and welding to a jacking point. At the same time the front wings were treated and painted. I believe all other paint on the car is original. The car remains entirely rust free – the work was done properly! – and needs nothing whatsoever.
The car will be serviced, MOT’d and has excellent tread on its Continental tyres. As you would expect, the car drives without fault. Tight, responsive and unexpectedly agile. It makes a tremendous noise and tends to attract attention!
The car will be on display at the BMW Festival on Sunday at Gaydon this year. The rest of the time it is located in Chepstow.
