background history
mr anthony gilbert bought this superb audi coupe new from authorised audi dealers contim motors limited on the first february 1982. having test driven both manual and automatic versions of the car he felt the automatic was the nicer of the two and specified this wonderful example in diamond silver metallic over grey graphics (colour code z4).
he has remained the registered keeper until he passed away and left the car to his wife janis in early 2004. the car has never wanted for anything in that time and has an excellent service history with lots of old mot’s to back up its ultra low mileage.
i bought the car in 2014 wit. The intention of keeping it forever as part of my classic audi collection but recent other classic car acquisitions mean this has to go. It is kept in a secure dry heated storage facility and does not get used enough to justify keeping her. That is a sin itself and the car needs to be used and enjoyed and appreciated. It is magnificent on the road and draws admiring looks wherever it goes; And being the gt5 s it makes a glorious 5 cylinder burble and it is so much fun to drive you will smile every journey.

exterior
this sleek iconic sports coupe is finished in diamond silver metallic, (code z4), over grey audi gt graphics (which are original items and are in near perfect condition – in itself a rarity). what amazed me when i bought the car was how original the paintwork was. It looked like a car that was a few years old. Being a perfectionist i had the car professionally machine polished and it has been garaged and carnauba waxed ever since.
the result; A deep lustrous shine that draws admiring stares by all who see it. The tapered bodywork blends beautifully into the moulded bumpers clearly displaying all the hallmarks of 1980’s sports car styling. I have never come across and example wher. The floors and boot were in perfect condition with no signs of rust or rot; Needing no remedial work and thus keeping all of the original decals and factory waxes which maintains more of the cars patina.
the car still has its all of its original glass and the rear window still bares the original supplying audi dealer sticker!
furthermore, supplying dealer number plates are still fitted for wonderful patina and the discreet gt badge adorns the tailgate. All front and rear lens covers are correct factory fitted items. The bumpers are original and are almost mark-free which is truly amazing given they are the original items and have not been changed; Amazing considering the car is 35 years old...
(please note the front number plate is not fitted as i wanted to clean behind it and it will be fixed with new number plate tape)
the window rubbers and surrounds are all in great shape and are not showing the signs of age that are common in audi’s of this age.
interior
every item inside this car, like the rest of it, is completely original and has not been changed or modified or recreated. Mr gilbert had car seats on his beloved audi for the first early years his wife recalled to me.
the car features audi's blue and grey cloth upholstery, and the whole interior is fully commensurate wit. The low 29, 400 miles covered. Sitting in the sporty classic interior justifies the term, time warp. Carpeting, headlining and door cards are in fabulous order and will delight perfection seeking individuals. All controls and gauges work with engineered precision including the additional gt gauges housed in the unmarked centre console. The sports steering wheel proudly displays the audi logo and all natural veins are visible due to the low mileage covered.
being critical the fabric has begun to fray on the driver’s seat although this doesn't spoil the car i am always one for being completely honest in my descriptions. I have had car. Trimmed in leather and i am told that the original fabric is still sold in germany so the seats could be recreated if they ever needed to be. That said the seats are in amazing condition and the foam is still firm and holds the passengers in place and in comfort.
the expensive and working blaupunkt tempelhof stereo radio remains in situ along wit. The supplying dealer tax disc holder. The dash has no cracks (to those familiar with classic audi's this is in itself is something quite rare). the boot area is remarkably clean with hardly any signs of use… truly superb!
engine & transmission
this rare cult-setting car is in excellent mechanical order and really asserts what early audi gt ownership should be about, fun! The engine is the desirable 1. 9 litre 5 cylinder example that produces ample power and makes the most glorious sound (similar to the ur quattro). the seemingly endlessly willing engine and such an addictive exhaust note are guaranteed to excit. The occupants and a smile on your face is a permanent fixture!
the engine has been well maintained its whole life and is as sweet as you would expect from an engine that has covered such a low mileage. A full service has just been carried out to include a new cambelt for the new owners peace of mind. The result is and engine that starts first turn of the key, and jumps in to life ready for action… this car is not short of performance credentials. The car drives superbly, the engine pulls nicely through the rev range, with no problems what so ever. Even when started from cold, the engine is very quiet, with no tapping and no smoking.
the automatic sports gearbox is precise and is a joy to use. Having had both manual and automatic versions of this car i can vouch that it is great fun to drive and nothing is lost wit. The auto. First and second gears are available via the shifter and changing into ‘d’ when driving hard gives you third gear and if foot to the floor the car will use the full rev range before changing up. So, for the twisty stuff you can be in the right gear at any time… audi intended the gt5 s to be a driver’s car even wit. The luxurious automatic gearbox. Come to the first bit of traffic and the auto pays dividends and feels (and drives) like a modern coupe. Wonderful stuff!
wheels, tyres & brakes
the highly desirable early alloy sports wheels were refurbished to the original finish (not the over glossy modern finish of a modern car…which is where most people go wrong when having these wheels refurbished) and now present in unmarked pristine condition with casting marks visible. I even refurbished the spare wheel at a total cost of over £500.
branded 185/ 60 r 14 tyres, have excellent tread remaining. The servo-assisted diagonally divided dual-circuit braking system with ventilated discs up front and drums to the rear have been overhauled and do an excellent job of stopping the car. The braking system was overhauled earlier this year at great expense including refurbished front calipers car so the brakes are in tip top working condition (please see the additional pictures).
the underside
having never been previously re-painted underneath i decided this winter to spend some time (and money) making sure the underside of the car looks a fresh as the rest of it. The sub frames were removed and stripped, sand blasted and repainted. All moving parts were checked, overhauled/ or replaced. The underside has no rust or rot or corrosion and has clearly never been welded. In fact, most of the factory ‘yellow’ wax is still present and is without doubt the best i have seen. The result is a car that could be taken to shows; It looks superb… (again please see the pictures.)

when i bought the car janis explained that after her husbands death the very early service invoices could not be found. During this time the car was serviced at supplying dealer contim motors. She promised to keep looking and is still hopeful that she will find them (we stay in touch); there is no question that a car of this provenance would have a perfect very early service record to match the rest! Everything was given to me in a large folder with loads of bills.

it is clear by the small increments in the mileage between services and other mechanical work that the car has wanted for nothing and that the mileage is genuine; As is apparent when you see the car.

The iconic ur quattro. If this was a 29, 000 mile 1 owner ur quattro i know it would be worth circa £50, 000 + (theres a nice 120, 000 ur quattro in ebay now for £42, 449)…
of these remaining cars most have had the typical 8 or more owners (i saw a gt coupe advertised last year that had 15 previous owners)…
most have covered well in excess of 100, 000 miles (after all they are more than capable of it!) … many are closer to and some are over the 200, 000 mark and yet command prices of thousands of pounds!
most have been modified with silly oversized alloys…. or “slammed” (lowered to a level wher. The ride quality is destroyed) …
nearly all have had their original stereos ripped out and the door cars and rear parcel shelf cut up to accommodate oversize speakers…
many have had engine swaps or are modified from other cars (thus destroying any residual classic car value)…
almost none will have all of their original glass or panels…
many have been stripped of their interiors and raced or turned into track day cars…
few will have any service history…
i doubt any will be one owner cars…
almost none will have any service history and paperwork to back up its history…
none will be in the as new condition of this magnificent example…

1980’s classic cars are becoming big business and prices are skyrocketing. The shape of this iconic audi is quintessentially 80’s and this must represent a rare opportunit. To acquire an appreciating classic car of wonderful provenance (and would sit very well next to a ur quattro in any collection).
it will appreciate in value like all great provenance and a1 condition classic performance audis.
