For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Vickers® Royal Navy Deck Tractor in NATO Green (1964).
MOT Exempt. Tax Exempt. 3500cc Diesel. 4WD, 4 Wheel Steer.
Here we have for sale a very rare and unusual four wheel drive vehicle. It was purchased by us some years ago, to recover heavy military vehicles and equipment. Now, due to the sale of these items, it is no longer required, so regretfully it needs to go.
This Deck Tractor is reputed to have served on HMS Ark Royal, prior to the decommissioning of the ship. It was CAST off in June 2015, with 5379 hours on the engine - It now has 5407 hours on the clock.
In our ownership, we have carried out various little jobs to get it on the button and in its current full working order. When we received it, interestingly, it was locked into first gear to prevent servicemen from going too fast on deck and risking toppling into the water! We have released the lock bolt, and now the vehicle has two speeds, the latter of which is really quite quick. The driving experience is superb, with centre seat positioning and wind in your face! It is very simple to drive, with no clutch and just a brake. It is also fully road-registered, complete with V5 logbook. As such, it would serve either as an ideal recovery vehicle for heavy goods (being almost 7 tonnes in weight) or as a social, vintage tractor runner.
Specification wise, this is an interesting vehicle. It has four wheel steer, making it incredibly manoeuvrable, and therefore ideal where space is at a premium. We have found it very useful for moving large vehicles in small spaces. There is a 500 litre Diesel Storage Tank within the vehicle, and a working fuel delivery pump with nozzle, so it can be used to refuel vehicles also. All the lights work, including the dash lights, and the front towing eye moves from left to right via a lever in the cab. Originally, these vehicles used to start using "Start Pilot" which is no longer available in the rechargeable can required. On milder days, it will start under its own steam, but in colder outdoor conditions a small squirt of accelerant into the air intake (an external hole on the vehicle!) is required. The engine runs sweetly, and pulls very well... and as previously mentioned, it is easy to drive and great fun. Being a true four wheel drive vehicle, this vehicle is also capable on soft and loose ground, despite its weight - it would therefore also serve to recover vehicles when stuck in the mud - perhaps for an off-road club that uses a quarry!
In summary, this is a rare, road registered, four wheel drive tractor, with amazing history. It could either be used for fun, or to do serious work, and at this price we think its a bargain!
