Description
Volkswagen Golf MK2 GTI 16V Oettinger E/ 16 (150bhp) 1989 G539 MGK
An opportunity to acquire a rare and genuinely excellent and superb Oettinger tuned MK2 Golf 16V. These cars are very rare, and are continuing to appreciate in value. A fantastic investment which currently forms part of my small collection of classic Golfs.
This car has fantastic originality and is completely standard and unmolested, exactly what the classic car investor looks for – provenance and originality.

Established in 1946, Oettinger Sportsystems GmbH remains the world’s earliest, foremost and most respected tuner of Volkswagen Audi cars. Those who followed, including UK based GTI Engineering, established a small specialist industry of building exciting conversions based on already fantastic VW Audi products.
A 1989 MK2 16V narrow bumper Golf GTI, delivered direct by VW to Oettinger in RHD form for conversion to 1800 E/ 16 engine specification, prior to retail sale into the UK market. This quite modest level of engine tuning increases peak power from the factory 139bhp to a useful 150bhp, via internal polishing, porting etc. The car is otherwise 100% factory standard, unmolested, specification.
In 1989 the cost of the Oettinger conversion on top of the base price of the Golf was DM 8, 000, about £4, 000 in today’s money. It isn’t therefore too surprising that this is a very rare and special car!
Interestingly, the Golf was delivered new to, and owned for many years by the world famous concert pianist John Lill CBE and has had only 5 owners in it’s 28 years prior to myself. Mr Lill clearly loved his Golfs and was prepared to spend a lot of money for a car that would stand out from the crowd as being subtly special, pretty quick and just that little bit different! Much as it is today, this car would be a fantastic talking point at any classic VW gathering.
The car is completely standard and factory specification (other than the Oettinger engine conversion of course), even including it’s original Blaupunkt radio/ cassette unit.
The never-smoked-in interior is simply beautiful, it really does present as virtually a new car, with no significant wear and tear at all. The car has had over-mats fitted from new and the original carpets appear untrodden. This must be as close to a ‘new; 16V interior as it would be possible to find.
The paintwork appears to me to be largely original in gleaming black with only a couple of small scuffs and parking ‘dings’ (which would very easily smart repair if you were aiming to show the car for concourse) evident.
The factory-fit original VW ‘Montreal’ alloy wheels have been refinished and are fitted with an almost-new set of quality Firestone tyres.
Factory spare wheel, tools etc are all present and appear unused.
The boot area is immaculate, parcel shelf uncut.
A full exhaust system has been fitted in the last year.
Full set of top quality, custom made fitted rubber floor mats are fitted and included.
There is no corrosion that I can see on the car, it really is superb everywhere you look.
I have recently fitted a NOS red-stripe front grill and 4 brand new headlamps/ spot lights which I had to hand, the front end of the car looks brand new!

The car runs and drives superbly, smooth as a top, and must be as close to a ‘new’ MK2 16V as you could hope to find after so many years. It would be perfect for showing and detailing to concourse, equally it would make a really ‘different’ and very cool daily driver.
I am only selling this car because an unexpected new classic Golf project has tempted me and I simply need the garage space!
The car is priced-to-sell as I do need the garage space, at the very realistic price of £7450.
Please contact me to view the car, but understand that test drives will only be on dry days and with full proof of comprehensive insurance for this specific car, and driving licence in hand.
