SILVER SURFER I
Started in 2005 and built over 3000 hours to SVA in 2008. 1000cc of raw BMW flat twin power with a "long" gearbox.
It has a colourful history and interesting provenance.
The first build to incorporate an asymmetrical flared scuttle it also has a storage locker behind the spare wheel adding to the boot space. There is a de-mountable luggage rack and a two-piece picnic table, both of which can be deployed on the coach rails separately. The rack is particularly useful for the essential wine supplies on return from French trips!
The double-duck tonneau is a four piece item allowing a variety of mounting options, solo, two-up, with or without side-screens. A custom-made leather bench seat gives comfort on long trips. The front cowl is in aluminium and the engine bears a hall-marked silver figure of the Silver Surfer on his board There are many details and extra touches including a split hinged bonnet, lockable glove box, tool store, white-knuckle passenger grab handle and a lighter socket for your GPS.
It has travelled over 23000 miles as far afield as Gotland and the Pyrenees. Invited to participate in the Grand Parade des Pilotes at Le Mans in 2009 it has the exclusive hall-marked silver commemorative plaque riveted inside the flared scuttle. A reconditioned steering rack has been fitted and a new MoT certificate has just been issued.
The engine was rebuilt at 10, 000 miles by BMW specialist Steve Scriminger in Sleaford who also fitted NiCaSil barrels and new pistons to take the 800 cc up to 1000. He also machined a squish in the heads as per sidecar racing spec.
The carburettors have just been serviced and the flexible fuel lines have been replaced as they were suffering from ethanol rot despite being marked as suitable. The car starts and runs well and has just had an oil change and service etc.
I have a folder of documents relating to the car and a few thousand photos from the collection of the chassis and conversion kit through building, completion, outings and events.
I am 5'9" slim build and I think the car would accommodate a slightly taller driver but probably not over 6' 2”
