1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint 1300

Highlights

  • Previously prepared for historic rallying, winning its class in various events
  • Upgraded to ‘Veloce’ specification and previously FIVA registered
  • 5-speed transmission fitted by Cloverleaf, roll cage and rebuilt rear axle by Alfastop

The Appeal

An example of Bertone’s finest penmanship, the Alfa Romeo Giuletta is amongst the most beautiful and perfectly proportioned small coupés of the era. With Alfa Romeo’s legendary twin-cam engine in 1,300cc form powering the rear wheels, the Giuletta became a popular model and proved itself to be very capable in various forms of motorsport.
This 1960 example was prepared for historic rallying around 20 years ago by renowned Alfa Romeo expert Chris Robinson and Tony Stevens at Alfastop. It subsequently won its class in several events and once came close to beating an ex-works Triumph TR4 on the Rally of the Tests.
With a recent respray and a history of sporting success, this is a charming example that is worthy of any collection.

The History and Paperwork

  • Prepared for historic rallying between the years 2000 and 2002
  • The vendor purchased the car in 2021
  • Has been something of a rolling restoration over time
  • Stored in a barn during the wetter months
  • MOT valid until June 2023
  • Previously FIVA registered (2003)
  • Large paperwork file, including invoices for previous work carried out including recent service at Bell Sport & Classic
  • While the interior is altered for rally use, the original seats and bumpers are included
  • Some rallying equipment has since been removed, leaving the car in fast road specification
  • The vendor suggests it could regain FIA certification quite easily
  • £30,000 spent between 2000 and 2002

The Interior

  • Bucket seats
  • Rear seats removed
  • Roll cage
The rally preparation of this Alfa Romeo extends beyond the mechanicals. Inside, the original interior has been mostly removed, although it apparently remains with the car. It now sports bucket seats, allowing occupants to sit lower in the car and ensuring they remain snugly in place. There is also a roll cage which extends along the roof line and down the A pillars.
The vendor informs us that there is some wear to various components, commensurate with competition use. This includes a few scuffs to the door cards and some wear to the carpeting. We are informed that the horn ring is also split, but continues to function as it should. There is a little fading to the headlining although it remains mostly clean and well supported.
The aforementioned bucket seats look to be in very good order and their period appearance means they are not at all incongruous with the character of the car.
To accommodate the 4-speed gearbox, the transmission tunnel was enlarged, evidence of which can be seen under the carpeting. Inside the boot, it is as spartan as you would expect from a rally car, revealing that the boot floor is well painted and without corrosion.
The painted dashboard looks to be in excellent order and we understand that all of the switchgear and instrumentation held within functions exactly as it should.

The Exterior

  • Recently resprayed
  • Some patination to brightwork
  • Straight bodywork
The vendor informs us that this Alfa has been subject to quite a recent respray and so it presents exceedingly well, as you would expect. We’re delighted to report that this car’s last few owners have not been at all afraid to use it and so there are, of course, a few small blemishes here and there and the vendor points out a little paint loss on the leading edge of some panels and some minor cracking on the rear wings. Overall, this is an exceedingly bright little car which we think looks perfect as it is.
It sits upon smart painted steel wheels and period correct tyres which really look the part and have plenty of tread remaining. The trim has degraded somewhat in places with some pitting and a general dullness to certain features. However, it remains eminently serviceable and we find the patination to be quite pleasing. While the bumpers are not currently fitted, they are supplied with the car and are reportedly in good condition.
The Giulietta once wore Cibie spot lamps which have since been removed. These too accompany the car should the next owner wish to refit them.
Underneath, there is evidence of some work having been carried out at various points in the past. You can see where welding has been carried out to crossmembers and around the jacking points. Some seams are now not as crisp as they perhaps once were but all appears solid and when you consider this car’s competition heritage, a little wear and tear is an inevitability. The vendor informs us that, besides a little surface corrosion here and there, the underside is in very good order.

The Mechanics

  • 1.3-litre DOHC engine
  • 5-speed gearbox
  • Alfastop rebuilt rear axle
  • Electric fuel pump fitted
  • 123 Electronic Ignition
  • Battery isolator in boot
Upon turning the key, the Alfa chirps into life without any choke, making it immediately clear that this is a mechanically healthy specimen.
Fitted with 123 Electronic Ignition purchased from Classic Alfa and an electric fuel pump, it runs exceedingly strongly and the vendor informs us that the Weber carburettors have been recently rebuilt.
Its June 2022 MOT revealed a few oil leaks although none of these were deemed excessive. The car benefits from a previously uprated engine, the taller gearing of a 5-speed gearbox and the rugged dependability of a rebuilt rear axle, completed by Alfastop.
The vendor reports that it drives exceedingly well, with sprightly acceleration accompanied by an intoxicating gruff exhaust note. It changes gear smoothly and comes to a stop in a timely manner.

Summary

We absolutely love this little Alfa. When so many cars of this vintage are squirrelled away in private collections, this car has been driven and we think it is all the better for it.
If you’re after an Alfa Romeo of this vintage, then this exceedingly healthy Giulietta is most certainly one to consider.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
