The Appeal

MG, a rather significant name in British motoring history. Arguably the go to brand for quality sports cars, the marque was famed for its stylish, dynamic automobiles, and none so more than the MG B. A modern and revolutionary design that paired an all new unitary body structure with BMC’s rather legendary B-Series engine, unquestionably the perfect recipe of performance, style and value meant that the lightweight 2 door soft top was an absolute hit, still boasting icon status to this day. 
As MGBs go, the example we see here certainly does take some beating. Possibly one of the finest to come to market in a considerable time, AGX 120B presents in truly remarkable condition. A highly original car, with a horde of rare factory features, the original engine, gearbox and rear axle have all covered just over 6700 since being rebuilt at the request of the previous owner.


The History and Paperwork

Smart, simple and stylish. Three words that rather excellently sum up the cabin of the little MG. It was of course this simplistic nature that drew appeal to the MGB back when first launched in 1962. The interior of this particular MGB has borne the test of time incredibly well and presents as such, with good clean upholstery and a large collection of rare factory options, this is certainly a stand out cabin. 
Two simple and clean seats are the centrepiece once the doors open, neat with red piping and good stitching, these are in great shape and distinctly lack the wear and tear commonly associated with cars of this age. At the sides we are presented with two matching door panels, twinned in with the aforementioned seating, the upholstery and red piping here is of an equally great standard. 
Front and centre sits the sculpted dash piece, still vibrant in its colour and lacking in sun damage or cracks to the plastics. This naturally presents in great order, as does the neat collection of gauges and switchgear embellished with smart chrome trim that we find housed within the panel. Those familiar with the model will be rather impressed when learning that the factory radio is both still present within the car and still functions well. There is also a neat collection of rare factory options installed within the car, including overdrive, a heater, headlight flasher switch and a black tonneau cover, which is still present and in great shape. 
One should also note that the vehicle has been fitted with a battery isolator switch and two 12volt usb ports for that subtle level of modern convenience. 
At the rear we are presented with an incredibly clean boot, within which we find a selection of MG tools, a spare wheel and the frame for the convertible top.


The Exterior

Tartan Red, arguably one of the finest choices of paint colour for an MGB, is what we find AGX 120B coated in. Presenting in wonderful condition, the car was treated to an extensive bodywork restoration circa 1999, and still looks as if it has just rolled off out of the paint shop. The paintwork is of a great standard and exudes a brilliant deep shine from all angles, we find it complimented by lashings of brilliant chrome trim, including the front and rear bumpers which are in great order aside from some minor blemishing on the front bumper. 
Whilst the MGB’s new owner will hopefully not have to utilise it in the coming warmer months, the factory “packaway” convertible roof, is of a great standard and functions fully, with the folding metal framework stored in the boot alongside the roof. The roof itself is of a great standard with clean black upholstery and windows.
Courtesy of the excellent job done by specialist workshop Cox & Perry the MG’s panel gaps and shut lines are impeccable and further compliment the car from an exterior perspective. 
At ground level we find four great steel wheels with brilliant chrome hubcaps, all four of which are in wonderful shape, as are the chrome caps that sit atop them. 


The Mechanics

In terms of iconic British engines, BMC’s B Series engine must surely be up there with the all time greats. Effortlessly blending performance, reliability and economy, the 1798cc four cylinder was an absolute hit in any car it was put in, including the MGB. 
AGX 120B is rather privileged to still possess its original engine, alongside its original gearbox and rear axle. All three of which have been extensively rebuilt during the car’s restoration of 1999. As a result of the rebuild, this mighty MGB is in impeccable mechanical order, the engine and engine bay present in incredibly clean fashion, a notion which is mirrored when looking at the sills, inner arches and other mechanical aspects of the car. 


With just a simple turn of the key the 1.8 litre four cylinder roars into life, an excellent tone bellowing from the exhaust. On the road the MG is reported to provide a magnificent drive. Lightweight, dynamic and incredibly raw, it really becomes clear why these little roadsters have remained so popular for all of these years. 
Perspective buyers looking for usability in their MG will be pleased to know this particular MGB has a tow bar fitted and also runs on a 12 volt electrical system. 


Summary

The question is, where would you find a better one? For those with an eye for rarity, originality and a truly clean classic, this may be the perfect car. With a well documented history, spectacular mechanical underpinnings and great bodywork and aesthetics, AGX 120B must without a doubt be one of the finest and most exciting MGBs out there today. 
Blending great performance with genuine usability, this highly original British roadster is the ideal motor for some fun throughout the upcoming summer months.
