1966 Ford Mustang Convertible 289 ‘K code’

Highlights

  • Original ‘K code’ 289, matching numbers car
  • Optional GT pack
  • Low mileage
  • Manual transmission
  • In fantastic condition inside and out

The Appeal

The first generation of Mustang is both a desirable classic and a great car to drive.

But when it comes to true collectibility, the ‘K code’ cars are probably the most sought after of the main production run cars. With some choice mechanical upgrades offering more performance, they continue to be popular with fans of the ‘pony car’.
This example is presented with very low indicated mileage, in original factory specification, with a desirable manual transmission and the optional ‘GT pack’.

It’s probably as nice an example of the breed as you’ll find…

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in October 1965 in Dearborn, Michigan
  • Sold through Davenport
  • First registered in July 1966
  • Genuine ‘K code’ car
  • Optional GT pack
  • Matching numbers vehicle
  • Imported from the US
  • Currently in Italy on German plates; no current TUV test
  • Vendor tells us the car has a part specialist service history
  • Only being sold as the vendor now lives overseas, so the car is not being used
  • Interior and exterior specification matches the VIN and build plate

The Interior

  • Factory spec black vinyl upholstery
  • Retro-style modern stereo and speakers
  • GT dial pack
  • Uprated 3-point seatbelts
We’re told by the vendor that they believe the car to be almost completely original inside and out.

Certainly, it benefits from factory-correct black vinyl upholstery that presents in excellent used condition. There are some very minor signs of age and wear, but overall the seats, door cards, carpets and Mustang branded overmats all appear to be in superb condition.
It should be noted that the original lap belts have been replaced with more modern, and much safer, 3-points seatbelts. However, the original items are included with the sale, should the new owner wish to return it to full factory specification.
The dashboard itself has the extra dials that come with the GT pack, allowing owners to keep an eye on every aspect of that mighty 289’s operation. All of the instruments, trim and switchgear items look to be in fine order, and the vendor tells us that everything operates just as it should.

We love the original, metal-spoked and wood-rimmed steering wheel, which offers just the right level of ornamentation for the cabin. Also updated is the sound system, which has been replaced with a retro-styled modern unit with matching speaker.

The original radio and speakers are also included with the sale.
At the back, the good-sized boot is in nice condition, trimmed with a black and white checker lining and matching cover for the spare wheel. The spare is a full-size item, and the original jack and toolkit are present and correct.

The Exterior

  • Factory correct Candy Apple Red
  • New fabric roof with vinyl tonneau
  • GT pack embellishments
Dazzling in its factory correct Candy Apple Red paintwork, this is a very handsome and well-preserved example.

The owner does not know if the car has ever been restored, but having decoded the VIN and build plate, we can assure bidders that, if it has, it has been done to a high standard and to completely original factory specification.
The paintwork wears some evidence of light wear from use, with the odd stone chip and light blemish.

There is a slightly larger chip on the bonnet and the owner reports that the bootlid is slightly faded, but otherwise the paint is very good. Likewise the bodywork itself looks nice and straight, with no damage or corrosion evident to our eyes.
Fitted by the current owner, the black fabric roof is a new item and therefore presents in excellent condition, with no tears, UV damage or notable wear.
All of the external trim and badging looks in fine condition, with the correct ‘289 High Performance’ badging and GT pack integrated front fog lights all present and correct. The brightwork wears some minor blemishes and very light pitting in places, but only what would be appropriate for the vehicle’s age and mileage.
The car is still riding on its original GT wheels, which present in fine fettle, looking to be original and well cared for, with only minor blemishes and marks commensurate with the car’s age. They’re shod in quality Vredestein tyres that look to have good tread remaining on them.
When you look underneath this car, it’s clear that it has been properly maintained. The floor pans, chassis rails, sills, valances and drivetrain elements we could see all look to be in very good order, with no notable damage or corrosion.

It’s all very clean, straight and confidence inspiring.

The Mechanics

  • 289 cu in / 4,735cc “High Performance” V8
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Power steering upgrade
  • Uprated brakes fitted
As a genuine ‘K code’ car, this Mustang benefits from the more powerful 289 ‘Hi-Po’ V8.

With upgraded pistons, lifterheads, con-rods, carbs and cylinder heads over the standard 289, it delivers a very healthy 271bhp and 423Nm to the rear wheels. It also comes as standard with a 4-speed manual, 3.50 rear axle and front disc brakes, making it a proper driver’s car.
The current owner has upgraded the car to power steering and also installed uprated brakes, but all of the original parts are included with the sale, should the new owner wish to install the factory items.
Under the bonnet, the engine bay is very clean and tidy, with the polished air cleaner and rocker covers really popping in the sunshine.

There’s no sign of leaks or overheating that we could see, and the vendor assures us that the car drives very well, with a fine V8 rumble, healthy performance and no unexpected vibrations, smoke or noises.

Summary

It’s easy to see why the first generation Mustang remains so popular - as the vehicle that popularised ‘muscle cars’ and a huge support network, it’s a great choice as a classic.
This ‘K code’ is an excellent example too.

Very well cared for, presented in factory specification, very low mileage and generally very fine condition, we think you’ll struggle to find a better example.

For anyone that loves an American V8, or just wants a lovely classic for sunny weekend drives, this has to be one to watch…

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da 0 € a 9.999 € 100,00 €
Da 10.000 € a 49.999 € 250,00 €
Da 50.000 € a 99.999 € 500,00 €
100.000 € + 1.000,00 €

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
