The Background


It's a well known fact that the Italians are renowned for their flair and style, and Alfa Romeo have certainly delivered over the years with some now iconic cars. After the huge success of the Sprint GT, selling just short of 22,000, the production came to an end in 1965. Alfa then introduced the newer and improved Sprint GT Veloce (Italian for fast). 

The engine used was Alfa’s type 00536, which featured larger exhaust valves. This enabled the engine to produce an extra 3 bhp and more torque over the previous model. Some other changes included the addition of a limited slip differential and different gear ratios. There were also changes to the interior, with different trim options available, and a few changes to the exterior trim.

The production of the Sprint GT Veloce lasted for just 3 years, when there was another revamp, with the release of the 1750 GT Veloce, known as the 1750 GTV. Manufacturing began in late 1967, with the car first shown to the press in 1968. The GTV used the same engine as in the 1750 Berlina and the 1750 Spider, which was a first for Alfa Romeo. The 1779cc displacement engine kicked out an impressive 120 bhp and 137 ft-lb of torque. Together with larger front brakes, dual circuit braking system and rear anti-roll bar, the car handled and stopped as well as it went. 

The exterior of the car didn’t get left out either, with the addition of four headlights, higher rear wheel arches and the 1750 badge on the bootlid. Changes to the inside included a new style dashboard that gave the driver a clearer view of the instruments, and the other gauges were also angled to point towards the driver.

The History


This lovely 1971 Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce, was imported by the seller from South Africa, making him the first UK keeper. The previous keeper in South Africa was a true Alfa fan who had owned the car for over 30 years, and who was responsible for having the upgrades done to the car, such as the 2.0 litre engine with uprated cams, and the twin 45 Dellorto carburettors.

The car has also had other items upgraded which we will get to shortly. One of the main things is the respray in the original colour of Giallo Ocra, which looks stunning.

The seller has enjoyed the 1750 GTV for the summer months and it runs and sounds fantastic. However, he has now decided to part with it, but this does make it the perfect car for someone to jump in and enjoy.

The Paperwork


The seller has just put the car through an MOT on 29th November where it passed with no advisories, even though it’s not necessary because of the age, but he wanted to ensure it’s ready for the new keeper. 

The V5 is present and shows 0 previous keepers in the UK. The 1750 GT Veloce comes with the relevant paperwork from the South African Police, showing the clearance for the car, and also the HM Customs receipt to show that the VAT and duty has been settled. 

There are also a number of receipts for parts purchased from various Alfa Romeo specialists, and finally, hiding in the passenger side storage area, is the original handbook and wallet.

The Interior

Inside the Alfa is all thought to be the original interior which is in excellent condition. The dashboard does have a couple of splits to the top as often seen on older vehicles. 

The wood insert across the dash and to the centre console has been gently sanded and re-varnished to give it a nice appearance. The instruments are in good condition and working as they should. The odometer is showing a reading of 90,914 miles, and the rev counter face does have some
slight clouding. 

The steering wheel has a split around the edge where the wood has come apart, this may be able to be glued back together. A USB adapter has been discreetly fitted to enable the charging of a phone.

The seats are in excellent condition. The driver's side usually takes most of the wear, but this is not the case in the Alfa, with both bolsters showing little signs of any wear, and the same can be said for the passenger seat. The driver’s seat tilt mechanism is sticking slightly and so it won’t tilt, but the passenger side is working as it should. In the rear, again, the seat is in excellent condition, with no damage to report.

The carpets in the car are also in excellent order with very little wear to them, the same inside the boot area. Lifting up the boot carpet, there are some new plywood sheets for the floor, with the spare wheel, jack and wheel brace present and correct.

The Exterior

The Alfa Romeo has had a fresh coat of Giallo Ocra, which has freshened the car up somewhat, and it looks stunning. There are a couple of odd chips which have been touched up, but nothing excessive.

Starting at the front, the four headlamps are free from cracks and the surrounds are in nice condition. The 7 bar heart grille is the original and holds the original Afla badge. The grille has just one bar that doesn't quite line up as it should but this has since been repaired.  

The bumpers on the car look to be the originals which have some light scratches from the years of being polished, but there are no signs of excessive pitting. Just to the right of the driver’s side headlight there is a slight blemish under the paint that got missed when the car was repainted.

Around to the flanks of the GT Veloce, and the classic shape and design looks fantastic. The door gaps are uniform, there are no dinks or dents to be seen. The car looks to have retained most of the original parts. Most recently it received new sills and floor pan.

The windows are generally in good condition with just a couple of age related scratches on the door windows, and the rubbers all look to be in good order. The door mirrors have a nice bright finish, as do the door handles, but these do have some very slight pitting under the chrome.

The rear of the Alfa is nice and straight, with the original rear light clusters crack free. The boot lid does sit slightly proud, caused by the fitment of a new boot rubber and the badges look to be the originals with some slight tarnishing to the finish. Again, the bumper is in very nice condition
with light age related scratches, as you would expect for the age.

The wheels are steel which have been repainted and finished off with the Alfa Romeo hub caps, and new matching Firestone tyres connect you to the tarmac.

The Mechanics

Alfa Romeo fitted the 1779 CC engine to the 1750 GT Veloce, producing 120 bhp, which made it a very appealing car to own. This engine has been upgraded to a 2.0 litre by the South African enthusiast, who also replaced the camshafts with Colombo Bariani performance cams, Borgo
pistons and sleeves, polished crank, and keeping all that fed with oil, is a high volume oil pump.

The inlet manifold has been ported and polished to Kalamakakis specs, and fueling is taken care of with twin 45 Dellorto carburettors.

The car starts up at the flick of the key, and sounds fantastic, with no untoward noises coming from the engine or transmission. Keeping the ride nice and smooth, the Alfa has had Kayaba gas shock absorbers fitted to each corner and shankel rear springs.

The overall result is a revvy 2.0 litre twin cam that performs and handles extremely well, making it a joy to drive.

Just a few miles ago, at 90,897, the car had a major service replacing all the fluids, HT leads, spark plugs, fuel filter, distributor cap, rotor arm, points and condenser. Finally the carburetors were stripped, cleaned, rebuilt and balanced, ensuring the GTV is running just as it should.

The Appeal

Perfect 1960/70’s Alfa Romeo styling has seen the interest in this era of cars gradually rise in recent years, making them become extremely desirable.

This particular one comes from a warmer climate, which usually means less in the way of corrosion. Previously enthusiast owned for over 30 years, has seen the GTV receive an upgraded revvy 2000 cc Twin-cam engine, twin 45’s and excellent handling.

The interior is in lovely condition making the car ready to be enjoyed, so what's not to love about this Italian classic?
