The Appeal
Following the great success of the original Goldstar during the 1950s and ‘60s, BSA decided to revive the hallowed name with their B50 which became the last of their large capacity single-cylinder bikes to utilise ‘unit’ construction. Known as the B50SS, the new Goldstar was an early proponent of the now immensely popular ‘urban scrambler’ aesthetic.
This 1971 example looks to be in really fine condition for its age with very little in the way of wear. The vendor informs us that it runs without fault and rides impeccably. There should be room in any collection for a purple Goldstar, so if there’s a corner of your shed that remains unoccupied, we urge you to consider this motorcycle.
The History and Paperwork
- The registration number current displayed on the bike is incorrect as it should read MWV 586J
- Exempt from road tax or MOT testing due to its age
- V5C present
- Three previous keepers indicated
- The odometer reads 3,531 miles, which we’re unable to verify
The Condition
- Striking purple paintwork in very nice condition
- We couldn’t see any obvious dents, scratches or significant stone chips
- The frame presents well, looks to be straight and there’s no corrosion to be seen
- All of the chrome looks in good order and without noticeable pitting
- Minimal wear to the seat upholstery and controls
- Complete with a headlamp and indicators for road use
- All the instrumentation appears in good shape
- The chromed wheels present well, although the tyres appear a little perished
The Mechanics
- 500cc single-cylinder engine
- ‘Unit’ engine and gearbox layout
- Appears to have been fitted with an electronic ignition system
- After rectifying a fault with the kickstarter using new old stock parts, the vendor informs us that this bike starts and runs well
- It reportedly rides impeccably, with no faults to report
Summary
A lesser seen iteration of the legendary Goldstar, this bike represents an interesting period in BSA history.
It looks to be a very usable example and we enjoy the forward-thinking ‘urban scrambler’ look.
