The Appeal
Type 105 Alfa Romeos have long been revered by petrolheads as true driver’s cars. With nimble handling, fizzy twin-cam performance and charisma that only Alfas can deliver, cars such as this beautiful 1600 GT Junior are very sought after machines.
The vendor informs us that this 1975 example lives up to all expectations and is fantastic fun to drive. The 5-speed gearbox was rebuilt by a specialist in 2021, and so we understand that the car is now particularly joyous to drive enthusiastically on your favourite ribbon of tarmac.
The History and Paperwork

The Interior
- Fitted with the Alfaholics carpet set

On the inside, this Alfa Romeo presents well overall and, while a couple of bits here and there would benefit from tidying up, it is an undeniably stylish place to be.
Most pressingly, the dashboard has quite a lot of cracking and would benefit from repair or replacement. Otherwise though, the dash looks to be in good order and the attractive veneer fascias look to be eminently serviceable.
In front of the driver, the gauge cluster is perfectly positioned to be visible through the sporting wood-rimmed steering wheel and the vendor informs us that everything works. The carpet set was apparently replaced by the car’s previous owner with the Alfaholics kit and so looks to be in good condition. The headlining is a little tired with some small splits, staining and sagging.
In the boot, there is a little rust stain on the carpet that has been reportedly left by an old toolbox. There have evidently been some repairs to the frame of the boot lid too. Otherwise, it all looks to be in good order.
In typically Alfa fashion, the seats are particularly groovy and somehow manage to be both stylish and comfortable in equal measure. There was very little wear to the black vinyl we could see and no obvious signs of damage. The same goes for the matching door cards which present very well overall.
The Exterior

Walking around the car, it would appear that the bodywork is very good indeed, with crisp swage lines, good panel fit and bright paintwork.
Red is the definitive hue for Alfa Romeos and this 1600 GT Junior, with its distinctive 'Bertone' styling, is a truly beautiful piece of design. The brightwork all looks to be in very good shape with no damage we could discern and we particularly like the steel wheels which have really come into vogue in recent years. They are shod with Firestone tyres which have plenty of tread remaining.
Perhaps understandably, people can be a little scared when it comes to looking underneath Alfa Romeos but this one looks to be very good. Yes, there is a little surface corrosion visible along a few seams and the lower edge of the sills but otherwise the floors look to be in remarkable shape for a 47 year old car.
The Mechanics

Sporting the legendary twin-cam engine that served Alfa Romeo for many years, this example really sings when you work it hard and the 1600cc variant is commonly cited by Alfa enthusiasts as the best revving iteration of the powerplant.
Following some untoward noises in second gear, the gearbox was rebuilt in 2021 by a marque specialist and performs faultlessly now as a result. One of the real selling points of the Type 105 cars was that they had a 5-speed box when most competitors at the time had only four and perhaps overdrive if you were lucky.
The vendor reports that it is very tractable out on the road and accelerates briskly through the gears. You really don’t need a radio in one of these and the stainless exhaust makes that twin-cam snarl even more sonorous.
Summary
This is a charming example of one of the most coveted Alfa Romeos ever made. If you fancy adding something to your garage that always brings a smile to your face, then you couldn’t go wrong with this Italian pocket rocket.
