The Silver Shadow was Rolls Royce’s first unitary construction model.
Introduced in 1965 it was updated as the Shadow II in 1977 when it underwent a makeover, getting rack and pinion steering and much improved front suspension and the more modern looking US chrome and rubber bumpers became standard everywhere, although they protruded noticeably less outside the US.
This Rolls Royce found its first home via Lex Mead in Manchester in June 1980, Lex being one of the biggest supplier of company cars at that time, perhaps this was a company owned or directors company vehicle, which would be good as it would have been maintained on the button in its early years.
The current owner has something of a collection of cars and is slimming down his garage, and decided to let this one be enjoyed by a new owner.
There are a few recipes with this car showing that over the last couple of years it has been well looked after with big ticket repairs for any niggle or problem.
It currently has an MOT until June 2022. It also comes with the original owners handbook folder and service book.
The cabin is a delicious carnival of caramel and chocolate. The smooth wooden dash has a deep shine to the lacquer which continues to the door caps and rear window surrounds. Much of the interior is trimmed in fine quality beige leather, covering not just the seats and door cards, but the centre consul and lower dash and dash top.
The floors are covered in deep, soft cream covered lambs wool mats which have protected the brown carpet, a nice contrast to the lighter browns of the cabin. This brown carpet extends to the boot area, where it is in lovely condition and we find the factory tool kit.
The Rolls Royce is panels and paint are excellent, with straight panels and excellent paint. This may be as we believe it may have been painted in 2014 as a receipt for almost £7000 is with the car. Matching the interior, it has a tan vinyl roof which looks good and the stainless steel and white highlighted hubcaps are excellent.
The chrome and brightwork of the bumpers, grill badges and all important Spirit of Ecstasy are superb with no pitting and a good shine to the metal.
Being a 1980 Silver Shadow, the vehicles comes with the 6750cc V8 motor, producing 189bhp, twinned with a Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission, allowing for a smooth and relaxed driving experience, with enough power to get you down the road.
In 2014 the carburettors were overhauled and at the same time the air conditioning converted to the new R134a gas and the hydraulic fluid for the brakes and suspension flushed and replaced. The rear torque arm was replaced in 2017, a £470 part, in tank fuel gauge sender replaced in 2016.
This looks like an extremely smart example of this ever popular Rolls Royce, the luxurious interior is in lovely condition and the exterior superb.
