The Appeal

They say everyone should own an Alfa Romeo at least once, and we think that this 1986 Spider would be a most worthy candidate.
With sleek roadster bodywork courtesy of Pininfarina, Alfa’s inimitable twin-cam rasping away under the bonnet and a convertible roof, there’s a lot to love about the Spider and it’s no wonder that they remained a staple of the Alfa Romeo lineup for so long.
Here we have a handsome Series III example which has been optimised for British roads with a right-hand drive conversion, MPH speedometer and the addition of a sump guard. It has covered very few miles in its lifetime and moreover, it’s beautifully presented in a very fetching shade of blue complemented by a sumptuous tan interior. 
While looking like the typical sports car, those who are fortunate enough to get behind the wheel of a 105 Series Spider soon realise that they’re much more than that. These splendid little Alfas make great tourers with ample luggage capacity, supremely comfortable seats and a charismatic drivetrain that’s as happy to cruise as it is to take on a challenging B road.

The History and Paperwork

  • Just 44,222 miles displayed on the odometer and these are supported by the MOT history

  • Accompanied by a large collection of parts invoices from UK specialists including Classic Alfa

  • We’re informed that it has been kept under cover in garages through its life

The Interior

  • Very original and nicely preserved
  • Pleasingly patinated in a few places

  • Period Clarion radio cassette deck
1986 saw the revision of the Spider’s interior, with the arrival of a ‘pod’ to house the instrument cluster and several other changes to clean up and modernise the styling. We enjoy how original this interior looks, with no indication of damage or excessive wear to be seen.
The tan leather seat upholstery has weathered in rather nicely with the gentlest of patina to the bolsters and we’re informed that they’re wonderful to sit in.
All of the plastics remain in really good order, as does the switchgear and instrumentation. The controls too, look to be in very fine order and we note it still sports the factory correct steering wheel and gear lever.
The dashboard, door cards, trim and carpets are all in very good condition with everything presenting well.  The same can be said for the inside of the boot, which is surprisingly commodious for a car of this sort.

The Exterior

  • A very handsome example
  • All four Cromodora wheels present very well
  • Light lenses, trim, brightwork and hood all appear in fine condition
  • Aftermarket Zender spoiler fitted and the original is included with the car

The Pininfarina bodywork looks fabulous from every angle and it’s immediately apparent that we have here a very straight example. Blue is a lesser seen colour on Spiders of any vintage, and we think that it really suits the car and is the perfect complement to the tan interior.

The paintwork presents really well with very few blemishes besides the odd small imperfection to an otherwise lustrous finish. We couldn't see any evidence of corrosion topside and a glance underneath also proved encouraging. We could see a little surface rust on the front crossmember, but this does not appear excessive and the recent MOT history does not find any areas to be of concern. Structurally.

The soft-top roof is in good condition overall, showing its age a little in places but operating well and with a clear, undamaged back window. The bumpers too appear free from any obvious signs of damage or deterioration and the same can be said for the trim and badging. An aftermarket Zender spoiler has been added to the boot lid as a more subtle interpretation of the ‘kamm tail’ original item, although this is apparently supplied should you wish to change it back to standard. 

The Mechanics

  • 2.0-litre, DOHC Nord four-cylinder engine with fuel injection
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Benefits from its low mileage and reportedly runs really well

With Alfa’s long-lived and characterful twin-cam under the bonnet, we can’t say we’re surprised when the vendor tells us that it drives really nicely indeed. The 2.0-litre variant provides great low down torque, but with plenty of revs to play with as well when you’re in a more spirited mood.
We’re informed that this example drives impeccably with smooth gear changes and good brakes. Both the engine bay and undersides present very well, the car starts easily on the turn of the key and idles happily with no untoward noises.

Summary

A gorgeous Italian two seater, this Spider is everything a classic Alfa should be; nimble and light with a great engine and looks to match. 

These are fabulous cars to live with and the vendor informs us that this example attracts admiring glances and comments whether they take it.
