THE BACKGROUND
Land Rover Defenders are good news at the moment, following the cessation of production of the classic original.
Even more in demand are 110 County Station Wagons, especially those over 30 years old that are now eligible for export to the USA.
And that’s what we have here – a 1991 110 Station Wagon with a V8 petrol engine, offered for sale by a long term owner who has cherished and maintained it for the past decade.
THE HISTORY
The vendor bought this 110 10 years ago and has used it as his regular transport ever since, taking care to maintain and service it throughout his ownership.
It has covered 112,000 miles and at some point in its life was fitted with a simple LPG system, which offers the refinement and added performance of the Rover V8 engine allied to diesel-like running costs – indeed, the vendor reports that the V8 is the most affordable to run Land Rover that he’s ever owned.
A new rear crossmember was fitted 3 years ago, and in the past year, the 110 has had a new rear chassis and a fairly comprehensive mechanical overhaul, along with a very recent service ready for its next owner.
THE PAPERWORK
Supplied with the 110 are a series of bills and receipts collected during the vendor’s decade of ownership, including those documenting its recent work. It has a V5 in the seller’s name and an MOT certificate valid to February 2022, which it passed with no advisories.
There are also loads of old MOT certificates and an owners workshop manual.
THE EXTERIOR
Make no mistake, this Land Rover is not a show pony and the vendor is very honest about its condition, which is solid and presentable but with a few scruffy areas.
There are various dents and scuffs, some corrosion on the door bottoms and on one corner of the front bulkhead, but nothing too dramatic. It’s a used and well-loved example that has spent much of its life in and around North London and has rarely ventured off-road.
Critically, the chassis is in excellent order. The rear quarter section and rear crossmember were replaced last year and the vendor has undersealed the chassis and coated it in used engine oil every year to keep it in tip-top condition.
A sizeable full-length roof rack is a notable addition, ideal for expedition trips and camping holidays.
THE INTERIOR
The rear of the 110 is given over to the LPG tank, so at present it is a five-seater, with an aftermarket cubby box between the front seats. However, the seller tells us there is still plenty of room in the rear, both behind and under, with potential space for side-facing seats if required.
It’s in tidy and presentable condition with no major signs of wear, but is far from concours.
All of the dials and switchgear are in fine fettle with the exception of the radio-cassette player, which no longer works.
THE MECHANICS
The owner of this Land Rover has been diligent in its maintenance, getting it serviced every year by a local independent.
Recently, it has had a new Turner camshaft, hydraulic tappets, timing chain and cogs, along with an exchange gearbox and new clutch from Ashcroft Transmissions.
The twin carbs were also overhauled with new needles and the radiator replaced with new cowl, fan and viscous coupling.
It has been fitted with new dampers, one turret, front exhaust pipes and an ignition coil. Every year, it has had new oil and filters despite covering a low mileage, and an oil and filter service has just been completed.
The vendor reports that it drives very well indeed, with good performance and strong brakes, along with very little play in the steering box.
THE APPEAL
As well as the appealing combination of V8 and LPG, coupled to the fact it’s now 30 years old, this 110 represents a great opportunity to get yourself a solid, presentable but slightly scruffy workhorse that is either the basis for a superb rolling restoration or to simple use as is and keep it maintained in the manner to which it’s accustomed.
It’s a straight and honest example in superb structural and mechanical order that represents a great opportunity to own one of the rarer Land Rover variants.
