As the first Bentley since the 60s not to share a body with a Rolls Royce, the Continental R was a special vehicle. Opulent in its appointments and stately in its styling, it was a high watermark for 20th century Bentleys.
Here we have a very well maintained example, presented with a fine history and in a desirable and striking colour scheme. With a high specification and that iconic V8 turbo drivetrain, it’s a perfect cross-continent express.

Recently it just had a couple of thousand pounds spent on a pre sale inspection By Colbrook Specialists in Stilton Peterborough to ensure it is absolutely ready for the new owner.
With ample room for four adults to travel in true style and comfort, the cabin of this Bentley is a lesson in luxury and grandeur. The light grey leather of the seats is contrasted beautifully by the St James red piping and secondary leather that enwraps the dash, steering wheel, centre console and gear shifter.
All of the leather presents in excellent condition, showing little signs of wear and certainly no damage we could see. Similarly the complementary deep red carpets and lamb’s wool overmats (currently in the boot) look to be in very good condition, with no evidence of staining or significant wear. The headlining is likewise in fine fettle, with no signs of staining, damage or sagging that we observed.
In the rear, the seats are individual items, making this a luxury grand tourer for four. Between the seats there is a large arm rest and very practical storage cubby.
Capping the doors and facing the dash is traditional Burr Walnut, which appears to be in superb condition, with no signs of delamination, warping or UV damage.
We’re assured by the vendor that everything operates just as it should, with no issues. We’re also told that there are no dash warning lights present.
Resplendent in its Mason's Black Finish, this grand tourer has a stately and imposing presence. From the iconic upright Bentley grille, to those sweeping rear haunches, it’s a tastefully designed and – in this colour – surprisingly restrained design.
The paintwork itself is in excellent condition for its age. So too is the external trim and brightwork, which is all complete and presents very well. We saw no signs of notable blemishes, corrosion or damage.
Still riding on its original Bentley alloys, shod with Avon tyres, the exterior condition of the car is a credit to its previous owners.
There was long a tradition of Rolls Royce cars not having their power ratings released, with the company merely saying the power was “sufficient”. This Continental R heralds from that period, although contemporary road tests suggest the drivetrain may put out in the region of 320bhp and more than 600Nm. Certainly, this would qualify as “sufficient”, even for a coupe as vast as the Bentley.
Unusually for a Bentley of this period, it actually features a ‘Sport’ setting that hunkers the car down and sharpens its responses, allowing keener drivers to exploit the limits of the vehicle’s capabilities.
The history file shows that the car has been well cared for, with an extensive service and maintenance history. Some recent works include: a full service (May 2020), new washer jet pump and fuel level sensor (2019) and a new alternator (2018). All work has been carried out by Bentley main dealers or specialists.
We’re informed by the vendor that the vehicle drives extremely well, with no mechanical issues to note.
When it comes to continent crushing, nothing does it as well as a big Bentley coupe. And the Continental R is one of the best – gorgeously appointed and with deep reserves of power.
This model is presented in a distinctive specification and is very well preserved, benefitting from an excellent history. As a way to cover distance in absolute, hushed comfort, little can come close.
