The Background
The Jaguar XJ-S was in production from 1975 to 1996 in various forms and engine options with several styling facelifts in that same period too.
The full Jaguar built XJ-S Convertible was introduced in 1988 after the Targa top version had not won many fans but unlike the Targa version the full convertible was a big hit and sold in very respectable numbers.
The History
An automatic transmission model, this XJS Convertible is one of the final-run 'Celebration Edition' cars.
It has been looked after by Swallows Jaguar Specialist near Burnham on Sea for some while. The current owner purchased the car to tour Europe in and immediately spent money on getting everything up together. The previous owner also used Swallows Jaguar so the car was already known to them.
Unfortunately, due to covid the trip has not materialised and now plans have changed so the car is up for sale.
The Paperwork
The car has a fair stack of supporting paperwork from Jag main dealers or specialist including all of the important documents such as V5c and MOTs.
There are a number of invoices for the vehicle from Swallows Jaguar as it has been looked after by them whilst under the last two owners.
The car has a really good history of servicing and the stamps in the service schedule are as follows,

The Interior
The cream leather interior in this XJS is in fine condition. There is minimal wear and it definitely has that distinctive Jag smell.
The mats have some discolouration but other than that it is in great condition.
The electric operated roof works well and is a pleasure to use. There is also a tonneau cover as seen in the pics.
There is a cd changer fitted in the boot.
The Exterior
The exterior of the vehicle is in tidy condition with no real issues to speak off. There is a small scrape on the passenger side of the front bumper and a small scuff on the wheel arch above it so probably from the same incident. Both pictured for reference.
The car has the odd age related stonechip but overall it’s still a class act. The chrome work is in great condition and it has 4 recently refurbished new wheels and new tyres fitted at quite some expense.
The Mechanics
Mechanically the car drives well and changes up and down very smoothly, it has the classic jaguar burble and sounds great under load or just pootling around.
The auto box is a pleasure to drive and the steering is very light considering the size of the lump under the bonnet.
In preparation for its European trip the car had a mini refresh mechanically to ensure it was reliable as possible. This included:
- Full coolant flush and new thermostat
- New Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs
- Removal and replacement of front and rear V mounts
- Fresh set of plugs ands coils
- New EBC Brake Discs and pads including handbrake pads
- Superpro bushes
- Full underside clean and fresh wax oyl applied
- Diff oil change
- New horn wired in
- 4 wheel alignment
- New sump pan and seal
- Air con regas
- New Bosch battery
- Performance air filter and silicone hosework
The Appeal
4 litre beast under the bonnet, smooth automatic gearbox in the middle, RWD at the back and no roof. A great tourer/cruiser.
The XJS was sought after in convertible form and still is. It's one of those classics that may have looked out of proportion with its long bonnet but its looks are just getting better with age.
This particular example does have a comprehensive history backed up by a wealth of paperwork.
If you are looking for something to cruise down to the coast in of a sunny summers day or your looking to dash across Europe, you’d look very stylish doing it in this convertible XJS.
