The Background

We all know that the Golf GTI is one of the most iconic cars in the hot hatch world, and the introduction of the Mk4 Golf was a deliberate attempt by Volkswagen to move the small family hatchback further upmarket, with high quality interior and higher equipment levels by using switchgear from its big brother the Passat and some of the executive Audi’s. The GTI was originally fitted with the 1.8 litre eight valve from the Mk3, until 1999 when the base model was upgraded to the 2.0 litre eight valve engine producing 115 bhp. The next step up from there was the 1.8T from the Audi line-up, and not forgetting the V5 four-motion and the R32. The suspension was more refined on the GTI, and they were also offered with bigger wheels to give more sportier styling.

The History

This 2001 Golf GTI 2.0 litre eight valve, was registered on 27th November 2011 in Towcester, and it appears to have spent just a year there before moving up to the Leeds/Harrogate area, where it has remained for the majority of its life. The V5 says it’s had 6 previous keepers, all who have clearly enjoyed the car looking at the full service history.
The last owner of this golf was handed the car by her grandmother, who, at 80 years of age, had owned the car for the previous eight years.

The Paperwork

A full complement of paperwork is present with the GTI, including a fully stamped service history booklet and the owner’s manual. There are plenty of invoices for work carried out over the years, all of which tie up with the servicing and MOT records.
All the previous mot certificates are present, with the current one valid until 8th March 2022.
The V5 is present and shows 6 previous keepers, and there are also 2 keys.

The Interior

The standard black and grey trim is in better than average condition for the age and mileage of the Golf. The driver's seat in particular has no obvious wear to the bolsters, which is usually a common place to wear. The passenger seat is also in excellent condition with no damage. The door cards are nice and clean. There is some wear to the handles and around the electric window switches. The rear seat is in excellent condition and does not look like it has had much use at all in the GTI’s 21 year life.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, the steering wheel is in quite good condition with no excessive wear, and the dashboard is free from any damage. The instruments are all reported to be working as they should with no warning lights displayed, and the odometer is showing a reading of 127,432. Moving to the middle of the dash, there is a VW CD player, and sitting just below is the radio cassette player, both of which are the original factory fit items. The gear knob does have some signs of wear but this is easy to replace should you wish. The switchgear all appears to be in good condition with no signs of excessive wear, and the same can be said for the indicator and wiper stalks.
The carpets are in excellent condition, fitted with a set of mats to protect them further. Up above, the light coloured headlining is nice and clean with no sagging or stains. Into the boot and this again is clean, with the original spare wheel located under the carpet.

The Exterior

The Golf is finished in Oceanic Green Metallic (paint codeLC6X) which is in good order. Starting with the front there are just a handful of stone chips to mention, mainly on the front edge of the bonnet. The bonnet lines up equally to each of the wings and the grille. The headlights are free from any chips and the lenses are relatively scratch free. There is a small scuff on the passenger-side corner of the bumper which has been touched in and also a scuff to the driver’s side rear bumper.
Moving around to the sides of the golf, all the doors align straight and even with a matching panel gap around each door. The driver’s side wing mirror does have a crack on the bottom edge of the outer casing, and also the mirror glass has a crack. The windows are all in nice condition with no scratches to point out, and the seals appear to be in good condition. There is one repair to mention on the nearside rear arch. It has had some paint work done, which looks like it was a scuff that has gone onto the bumper, as this has also had a little bit of paint. There is also a slight scuff on the passenger side rear door, just above the side moulding.
The rear of the Golf is in good order. The tailgate aligns as it should, and the GTI Specific lights have no cracks or chips to them. All of the badges are finished in a bright and clean condition.
The wheels are the original five spoke GTI alloys, which do have some corrosion to the faces but could easily be refurbished by a wheel specialist. The tyres have recently been replaced and so are in excellent condition.

The Mechanics

The eight valve GTi starts with the flick of the key and sounds just as you would expect, with no untoward noises coming from the engine. The five speed gearbox is reported to have a smooth change, and being a GTI, the car pulls quickly through the gears.
Coming to a stop just as well as it goes, the seller reports that the car stops in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal. The car feels nice and tight with no noises coming from the suspension or transmission.
A recent service carried out on the 25th May 2021, has seen the timing belt, tensioner and water pump replaced, ready for the new keeper.

The Appeal

Definitely one to watch. Finding a standard golf GTi is quite difficult nowadays as there are becoming fewer mk4’s to choose from.
A nice standard GTi which has an extensive service history. Being a GTi model pretty much ensures that the price is only going to go one way. It’s definitely the right time if you’re in the market for an affordable GTI.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
