THE APPEAL
The weird and wonderful Harley-Davidson V-Rod was a modern ‘muscle bike’, launched 20 years ago after a collaboration with Porsche saw the sports car maker develop a unique water-cooled V-Twin engine for the legendary motorcycle manufacturer.
Under the development name “Revolution Engine”, the new V2 engine for the “V-Rod” was an 1,131cc motor based on a racing engine that delighted Harley-Davidson's demanding clientele both for its performance as well as its imposing sound.
With a DOHC valve train and electronically controlled fuel injection, the VRSC-series Harley with its four-valve engine put out up to 120bhp, with incredible acceleration and a distinctive V-Twin soundtrack in keeping with Harley’s less than shy and retiring manner.
This is an early V-Rod and has always been a collector’s item, having covered just under 2,500 miles from new.
Yes, that’s correct – and average of just 125 miles a year. In reality, though, it has covered just a handful of those since MOT records began in 2005.
Since then, it has been in dry storage but kept running, and it is sold in running and working condition.
The first thing you notice about the V-Rod is its styling – a mishmash of modern and retro, with unmistakable swept-back styling and a unique silver colour scheme that mixes traditional Harley-Davidson styling cues with more modern, streamlined features such as the aerodynamic filled-in centre hubs.
It’s in great overall order as you’d expect from a bike that has been barely used, but there are some marks from storage and some of the chrome trim on the exhaust pipes and headlamp surround has deteriorated and is slightly pitted. This is neither major nor a difficult problem to sort out, though.
The tank, frame and seat are in excellent condition.
With 120bhp and lots of low-down torque, the V-Rod is a responsive machine and has an impressive turn of speed despite its inherent bulk.
It has been laid up for the past five years but the vendor has asked his mechanic to get the bike into good running order ahead of it being sold to its next keeper.
It starts and runs well and was amid mechanical overhaul at the time of our photography.
What we have here, then, is a highly collectable bike that has been kept from new as a collectors’ piece and seldom ridden.
As a result, it must be one of – if not the – lowest mileage 2002 V-Rods in existence.
It’s one that deserves to be passed on to a fellow collector and preserved further, as an important model in motorcycling history.
