The Appeal
The new Daimler Sovereign Series-1, an upscale Jaguar XJ6-based luxury saloon, was introduced to the world in October 1969. Virtually identical to its Jaguar sister, the main differences were the Daimler badging, beautiful fluted grilles, and different door cappings. Benefitting from the powerful 4.2L I6 engine, and the upgraded transmission offered in 1970, it offers three forward gear selections, enabling the driver to hold the engine in gears 1 and 2 for better acceleration when needed.
This particular example is in a state of non-use for its recent known history, but is an excellent fully original example which can be brought back to life with a full restoration project benefitting from many interchangeable parts between it and the Jaguar XJ6, or used as a parts donor with the current owner stating the car is complete.

- Majority of history unknown, this vehicle was purchased with intention to be a parts donor for an XJ6, but is no longer needed due to change of circumstances
The Interior
- Owner states all lights, switches, buttons are in unknown functional state as hasn’t been driven or used
- Seats in used condition, showing signs of wear and age
- Driver’s seat with medium to heavy signs of use but no tears, passenger and rear seats in better condition
- Some spots/mould present on seats
- Footwells and kickboards in worn but usable shape, would benefit from cleaning
- Dashboard in overall good condition
- Wood veneer shows some start to delamination, but overall good
- Steering wheel in overall excellent condition with small signs of use on the wrapping
- Buttons, switches, and dials in excellent condition
- Tachometer and speedometer could use new glass
- Headlining sagging
- Boot is in overall condition expected for the age of the vehicle, but spare tire is present, and trim is in place.
The Exterior
- In overall used and aging condition, but leaves room for improvement
- All panels and trim present, but some weather wear apparent
- Brightwork in aged condition, but for the most part in good condition for the age
- Paintwork in attractive colour but fading is apparent and rust setting in places
- Glass in overall good condition with some scuffs and scratches, but without any cracks or chips larger than a pinpoint
- Light lenses in good condition but some fading can be seen
- Wheels in overall good and usable condition, all centre caps present
- Tires still with some tread, but do show some age, would likely need replacing
- Underside shows some heavy signs of corrosion with rust setting in, should not be driven in current state
The Mechanics
- Engine bay in good visual condition for the age of the vehicle with some signs of corrosion present
- 4.2L I6 engine
- Owner states the engine turns over but will not start due to sitting for known history
- Owner states transmission, brakes and suspension is in an unknown state currently, as vehicle has not been driven
Summary
Looking at this car how it sits, one can’t help but to imagine it in its full glory 50 years ago. With such strong character, this Sovereign is a good candidate for a full restoration, without any known missing elements or trim! Alternatively, it can be used as a parts donor for another Sovereign or XJ6, purchased at a great price.
