The introduction of the E36 Compact in 1994 marked a move into new territory for BMW, as the market for premium small cars boomed.
Based on the E36 3-Series and sharing its wheelbase, the hatchback Compact was a whole 30cm shorter, with a stylish chopped off tail and functional tailgate. Unlike most cars of its size, it was rear-wheel-drive and hugely engaging to drive, offered with a range of four and six-cylinder powerplants carried over from the rest of the 3-Series range.
Among them, the 318Ti was a real gem. Powered by a 16v 1.9-litre engine developing 140bhp, it was more lively than the six-cylinder 320i and loved to be revved hard, with an intoxicating engine note and was as close to a hot hatch as BMW could muster while maintaining its sophisticated image.
Today, 318Tis are actively sought after by those in the know, but good original examples are few and far between, thanks in no small part to the Compact’s popularity with the drift community.
Finding one like this, then, is a rare event – and it’s a real peach. A three-owner car, it belonged to BMW itself for the first two years of its life and was supplied to a London-based gentleman owner in 1999 by the Cooper BMW dealership in Reading. He owned it from early 1999 right up until March 2022 and kept it diligently maintained. In his later years, he covered just a few hundred miles a year but still had the car serviced every few months, with all of the work documented in the car’s history folder. Since 2008, when it had 64,000 miles on the clock, the car has been serviced 20 times by an independent BMW specialist in Hammersmith.
You’ll struggle to find another Compact like it. It’s not perfect – there are a couple of minor faults on the snag list – but the bodywork is excellent and the black leather seats are in fine order. It’s one to cherish.

SUMMARY
Premium small cars were big business in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with the three big German premium brands all introducing small versions of their compact execs. The E36 Compact was the first of the breed – a trendsetter, and arguably a better car than the Audi A3 and Mercedes C-Class Coupe that followed in its tyre tracks.
It was certainly the enthusiasts’ choice, thanks to its wonderful dynamics, rear-drive layout and general feeling of wellbeing.
All of that still applies today, with the added bonus of the BMW E36 rapidly establishing itself as a modern classic in all its shapes and guises. The Compact is one of the rarest – many of them being modified or drifted into oblivion. Not this one. This one is as original as you’re likely to find, with a pedigree rarely seen on a car of its era. One for the discerning BMW enthusiast to put away and cherish.

Ammontare dell'offerta
Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999
£100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999
£250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999
£500.00
£100,000 +
£1,000.00
Superamento immediato dell'offerta
