By the time the 997 was revealed at the Paris Motor Show in 2004, Porsche purists had started to mellow to the idea of a water-cooled 911. After all, the 996 had been around for seven years, the engine was still in the back, and as long as the tail wagged the dog, the most important strand of 911 DNA was still alive and well.
As a result, the 997 is arguably the most popular of the water-cooled variants of the car. Introduced in 2004, it was more classically styled than the previous 996, but used much of its architecture and running gear. In 2009, it was improved further. As well as ironing out some minor reliability concerns, the 997.2 (as it is known among the Porsche hardcore) is the result of a mid-cycle facelift, unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show and featuring more efficient direct fuel injection engines and redesigned suspension.
This one is the most desirable of the lot – a Turbo S with 523bhp, all-wheel-drive and a high level of standard equipment.

The Porsche ‘PCM’ stereo/infotainment/trip computer system works as it should and displays an enticing Porsche logo on start-up, while all of the dials and controls work as they should. Excellent order
No major faults
For a 12-year-old car wearing its original paintwork, the 997 is in wonderful condition with only a few very tiny marks to the paintwork and nothing of any concern whatsoever.
The paint is understood to be all original with one small scratch on the rear spoiler and a few stone chips on the bonnet. The car has been ceramic coated, too. It rides on a set of 19-inch centre-lock alloy wheels with coloured Porsche-crested centre caps, yellow callipers, carbon-ceramic brakes and four matching Michelin tyres.
The current owner has kept the car stored in a climate-controlled garage during his tenure, and the car has never been used in the wet.
THE MECHANICS
3.8-litre six
Seven-speed PDK transmission
Smart under-bonnet presentation
No known faults
The 911 is equipped with Porsche’s characterful 3.8-litre flat-six, which in Turbo S form has an impressive 523bhp and 516lb ft of torque.
The PDK transmission is Porsche’s dual-clutch sequential semi-auto system, which uses electromagnetic clutches to deliver razor-quick changes. It can be operated via the gear lever or steering wheel buttons.
It has been carefully maintained by main dealers and was last serviced just over 1,000 miles ago.
It starts and runs beautifully and the vendor reports that it is fantastic to drive, with no known issues or faults.
SUMMARY
This is pretty much as good as a 997 gets – a great colour, in superb condition, minimal miles and with a comprehensive history, reported to be in great mechanical health. It’s a great modern classic to enjoy and, as long as you keep up with its maintenance, will be an inexpensive one to own as 997s – especially the 997.2s and Turbo Ss - are rapidly increasing in popularity, meaning it may well prove to be a safe investment as well as a wonderful car to drive.
