L'Atelier des 1000 is delighted to offer for sale an icon as rare as it is coveted, the Volkswagen Golf 1 GTI 16S Oettinger in its Black Metallic paintwork and iconic red and black interior. Developed at the request of Volkswagen France to counter the arrival of rivals such as the R5 Turbo, this exclusive version is based on a GTI 1600, prepared by the famous Oettinger with a 16-valve cylinder head and twin camshafts.
The result: 136 bhp, an engine that revs up to 8, 000 rpm, and breathtaking performance for its time. Aesthetically, it is distinguished by a 4-lamp grille, ATS wheels, a BBS kit and a special interior.
More expensive than a BMW 323i when it first came out, it quickly became a Holy Grail for collectors, and today remains one of the most desirable Golfs ever produced. Produced in just 1, 250 examples, this Oettinger is an exceptional youngtimer, combining history, rarity and pure mechanical pleasure. The model we are presenting here comes from a very fine private collection and has just 116, 300 km on the clock.
It is in remarkable condition, reflecting meticulous maintenance and excellent preservation over the years, with a file of invoices covering the last 20 years. Mechanically, the engine runs very well, with crisp revs and a lively response to acceleration. The cylinder head has undergone a complete overhaul to improve reliability.
The 4-cylinder is combined with an Oettinger 4/ 1 manifold and a stainless steel line, revealing the unique voice of this engine. The 5-speed gearbox is a pleasure to handle, with precise guidance and smooth gear changes. The clutch does its job, with no signs of wear or weakness.
The chassis, renowned for its agility, is sound and well-balanced, aided by an anti-roll bar at the front to stiffen the body. The original suspensions have been replaced by threaded bushes, offering a more stable and precise ride. The running gear is also in very good condition, with no particular play.
The ATS wheels are in excellent condition, and the tyres are also in very good condition. The paintwork is in very good condition, with a very nice sheen and no noticeable defects. The underpinnings are in good condition overall, as is the rest of the vehicle. The original interior is very well preserved. The two-tone fabric seats, rare and much sought-after, are in excellent condition and offer very good support. As with any restoration, the interior has not been forgotten: from the window cleaners and door panels to the air grilles, many components have been replaced with new original parts.
The black headlining has been redone and is in perfect condition, as is the rest of the interior. The dashboard is neither cracked nor worn, and all the instrumentation functions normally, with various gauges having been replaced. The original steering wheel shows no noticeable wear.
