The Triumph TR3 is a British roadster in its purest form, the best form. It had the look of a superstar, the charisma and charm, three aspects true to Triumph's craftsmanship. As the successor to the magnificent TR2, the TR3 was produced in two versions from 1955 to 1962. The performance-oriented power of the TR3 brought competition and rivalry to the Mercedes-Benz 190SL, the Morgan Plus Four and the Porsche 356, to name just three. Once the TR3 was launched, it was loved by all.
Rather than being a brand-new and discontinued car, the TR3 was an evolution of the TR2. A completely new concept wasn't necessary, as the fact we still know them under the 'British roadster' badge says enough. The TR3 was fitted with better brakes simply because it produced more power than its predecessor. By enlarging the carburettor, Triumph managed to make the TR3 ten per cent more powerful. On the other hand, the front drum brakes were replaced with disc brakes, something never done on a British car.
The TR3 exists in two generations, informally. The first TR3 was introduced in 1955, named 'TR3a'. In 1962, the TR4 was announced as the successor. However, Triumph dealers were not ready for the TR4. Triumph decided to initiate a transition period by launching a so-called 'TR3b'. The TR3b offered more power and could be considered slightly more modern. Just over 3, 000 TR3b were produced. The distinction between the TR3a and the TR3b remained unofficial and almost nominal; it was never officially recognised by Triumph, but the distinction is accepted.
TR3a
The TR3a is a term referring to the TR3 after its first update, which was in fact minor. It was sold from 1957 to 1962 and the 'a' series features several minor changes and improvements over the first-generation TR3. It features a wider grille, externally mounted chrome door handles, and a tool kit became standard with the TR3a as initially this box was optional.
Although it's an unofficial distinction, enthusiasts recognise it. It's simply Triumph not to have made the distinction. Almost 60, 000 TR3a were produced. TR3a models are still immortal classic cars and highly sought after, making them solid classics.
