1972 Sunbeam Rapier Fastback Coupe LHD

Vendor supplied images

Highlights

  • Highly original
  • Unusual left-hand-drive example
  • Registered in Spain

The Appeal

While it’s perhaps not the most famous piece of 1970s styling, there’s no doubt that the Rapier Fastback was a superb-looking motor. With the pillarless cabin and swept design, it held its own nicely amongst a backdrop of increasingly stylish European motors.

This example has spent much of its life in sunny Spain, and is heavily original, with no known cosmetic or mechanical modifications. As a result, it’s a great thoroughbred that’s perfect for throwing you back to the 70s, when the platforms were high, the bell bottoms were broad and the radio was loaded with New Wave.

The History and Paperwork

  • Manufactured at Rootes’ Hillman Imp factory in Linwood, Scotland
  • First registered in 1972
  • Exported to Spain in 1976
  • Indicates 38,525 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • As a result, sadly we can’t authenticate this as a true reflection of mileage
  • Car comes complete with Spanish registration paperwork

The Interior

  • Sporty black interior, entirely original
  • Leather-effect vinyl seats with a deep grain
  • Wear throughout, with some open seams but no tearing
  • Tidily arranged dashboard with original dials and tactile instruments
  • Dashboard has some wear to its top, including some cracking and bubbling
  • All instruments are clear and easy to read, with only a light wear to the switches
  • Space available for a radio/cassette player
  • Carpets and headlining carry some wear throughout
  • We note that the headlining is sagging towards the rear
  • Some damage to the vinyl siding on the rear right-hand pillar
  • Door cards present well with no significant wear
  • Boot appears solid with no corrosion presenting itself underneath the carpets

The Exterior

  • Impressive, distinctly continental styling
  • Bodywork is straight and tightly-knit with no major issues we can spot
  • Some light blistering underneath the vinyl pillar siding
  • Paintwork is nicely kept with no chips or cracks we can highlight
  • Some wear and light patina to the branding and chromework
  • Glasswork and lenses present well with no chips or fractures
  • Car is sat on its original wheels, which present nicely
  • Shod in a full set of Maxxis tyres, which look nearly-new
  • Car’s underside is in excellent shape, commensurate with the car’s life in Spain

The Mechanics

  • 1725cc I4 engine
  • 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive
  • Engine bay is in fair order, though has some wear throughout
  • Reassuringly original with no reported mechanical modifications
  • We’ve been informed of no leaks, bangs, knocks or smoke from the engine bay
  • Car is starting and running well

Summary

A lesser-spotted, distinctly 70s British fastback, this Sunbeam Rapier is a fastback piece of authentic, retro loveliness. With a little bit of interior restoration, this could be a superb and rather unusual addition to any collector’s garage.
