This 15/ 98 Short Chassis offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of only 74 such examples produced, with this example poised at a pivotal point in its restoration. Currently configured with significant performance upgrades, executed here at Ecurie Bertelli, it offers its next custodian the choice between a refined, high-specification road car or a potent, FIA-eligible competition machine.
Having spent its early life in the UK, it was relocated to Germany in 1976. In 2000 it was purchased by the current owner and returned to UK soil.
Since then, having a deep fondness for the model and having owned several, it underwent a focussed and sympathetic mechanical transformation with the aim of enhanced performance. The 2L engine has been upgraded to Speed Model specification, featuring a dry-sump system and also an uprated exhaust for superior power and reliability. Additionally, the drum brakes have been fitted with a Lockheed hydraulic brake system - originally the preserve of the Speed model - now giving braking performance akin to that of early disc brake systems.
Currently, the vehicle is presented as a high-grade rolling chassis, at a crucial juncture which allows for two distinct paths of completion. Option one would be to create the ultimate 15/ 98 tourer: this would entail repairs to the rear wooden frame and aluminium skin, a full repaint and re-trim. Option two would be to create a Speed Model recreation: this would entail creation of a Speed Model racing body which allow the car to obtain FIA HTP papers and therefore access to competition at world class events such as Le Mans Classic, whilst remaining a capable and useable road car.
